Chapter 30

The next day, Liz noticed she hadn't felt any more pain or had any bleeding, so she called the company and asked them to book her a flight. She was going to see her parents and asked them to postpone all meetings scheduled for the next two days.

Liz was packing her suitcase when her phone rang. She looked at it and saw it was a call from Henry. She answered, greeted him, and said she was very busy and couldn't talk because she was packing her suitcase at that moment. She told him about her father's health and that she really needed to be with him.

Henry asked if there was anything he could do to help, and she said no, she was fine. But before she knew it, she was crying and said she wasn't fine; on the contrary, she was very scared because her mother didn't want to say what was wrong with her father over the phone.

"Calm down, Liz. I wish I were there to hug you and calm you down."

"I wish you were here by my side too," Liz said. Then she said she needed to hang up and they would talk later. She hung up the phone but kept thinking about what she had just said to Henry and couldn't believe she had said that to him.

Liz's flight was in the afternoon. She went to the airport much earlier to avoid rushing, following the doctor's recommendation, and informed her mother she would arrive in three hours.

When Liz arrived at her parents' house, it was already night. Her mother was with her aunt. Liz greeted them, put her suitcase down, and immediately asked about her father.

"Where is he?" She asked her mother to sit down first so she could explain what had happened. She then said that her father was in the hospital, having had a heart attack. She had been with him until now and only came home to wait for her.

Liz was shocked and asked her mother for a glass of water. Her aunt got up to get it. Liz drank the water and asked to go to the bathroom, saying she felt a bit nauseous. Her mother was worried but thought it might be due to the shock of the news. After all, she still didn't know about the pregnancy.

"I want to see my father now. Can we?"

"Don't you want to rest a little first?" her mother asked, a bit apprehensive.

"No," Liz replied firmly.

So, they went to the hospital, and her aunt stayed home to rest a bit.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the nurse led them to her father's room. Liz saw him hooked up to machines and started to cry, hugging her mother, who cried along with her.

Liz said she needed to speak with his doctor. The nurse said she would take her to his office, where he was already waiting for her. Her mother had informed him that she was coming and would want to talk to him. She asked Liz to follow her.

In the office, Dr. Lincoln greeted her. Liz greeted him back and immediately asked about her father. He replied that he wanted to give her good news but unfortunately couldn't. He believed her father was just holding on to see her. They had done everything they could.

The doctor noticed Liz wasn't feeling well and took her blood pressure. She then told him she was two months pregnant. She had just found out and hadn't even had time to tell her father. She asked if she could be alone with him. He said yes but would examine her afterward. He handed her a tissue as tears rolled down her face and accompanied her to her father's room, leaving her to say goodbye.

Liz approached her father's bed, held his hand, kissed his face, and started talking to him. She said she wanted to share some news: she was pregnant with his first grandchild. She regretted not telling him sooner, explaining she had just found out and had done the tests but hadn't even gotten the results yet. She had planned to tell Henry (the father) and her parents on her birthday, which was coming up soon. "But now? Now there's no more time. Please forgive me. I should have visited more often to be with you. I wanted so much for you to play with your grandchild and for him to meet his wonderful grandfather. I love you so much," Liz said, breaking down in tears, laying her head on his chest.

The machines started beeping. The doctor, who was nearby with some nurses and a general practitioner he had asked to stay close because of Liz's condition, quickly rushed in. Liz saw everything go dark around her and heard distant voices asking to take her to a room.
