Sitting in the middle of the room was a figure tied to a chair. Their head was slumped forward, their once lively eyes now we're just tired ones. My heart just did this thing inside me.
"Elena?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Her head snapped up, eyes wide with recognition and relief. "Emilia…" she croaked, voice hoarse from lack of water. "You shouldn't be here."
Neither should you have gathered, I wanted to say, but we both knew it was no longer possible. Ava had stepped over the line too many times and now she was trying to play her last card.
I worked fast and my fingers felt the knots that held Elena's wrists. "We need to get you out of here before"
As if on cue, a slow clap resonated through the chamber literally sending ice down my spine. I turned around and felt almost breathless as Ava emerged from the darkness, her smirk telling of her triumph.
