Chapter 23: Root of Ambition

"Genevieve!" her mother, Margery, called out one morning, her voice edged with frustration. "Why are you just sitting there doing nothing? We need a plan to save this family!"

Genevieve sighed, dropping the yarn and shawl she was knitting. "Mother, I am trying to think of a way to help, but it's not as simple as you make it sound."

"It is simple, Genevieve." Her father, Thomas, stated from across the room.

"If it's so simple, why are all your efforts not making our monetary situation any better?"

Genevieve retorted, but then she realized what she had just done and readjusted herself.

Her father's stern gaze met hers from across the room. "You need to find a noble to marry. Your looks are an asset we must use to our advantage. So, you will stop acting like a man, stop dressing like a man, stop your fight training, and start acting like the lady you are. Your younger twin brothers are enough sons for me."
