Chapter 8 - Day 22-30

After taking a bite we got out of the car and started walking toward the first house in the village, a meter away.

The house has fences on all sides.

-"Let's Split and look around to see if there are no zombies in the garden and then we'll go in."

Lana nodded.

We separated and looked around.

After a minute we rejoined at the front door.

"There were two on my side i killed them, but they breached the fence."

-"Took bad... there is a plank on the windows. There is someone... or there used to be."

I said while looking at the door barely opened with the lock broken.

"I take the lead."

-"Hmm"

She opened the door and walked in, the floor made an old wood-cracking sound AT each step we took which attracted two zombies we took care of.

We entered each room of the first floor and we headed towards the stairs.

There was some furniture on it.

"It must have been to block the undead."

We freed the stairs and continued what we were doing, flashlights in hand.

Every window was blocked with wooden planck and curtains.

We slowly got up and searched the floor, we found a zombie on a bed with a bandage on the torso.

He started to move and tried to grab me with his hand.

I took my knife, grabbed its head, and thrust it into its right ear reaching the brain.

I slowly took out my knife and let go of the head.

After cleaning my knife on the sheet.

"Alex there is nothing, we can search the place!"

-"Ok"

I looked at the Zombie...

It was cold and its skin was grey but it wasn't falling off its face, he must have died within the last 5 days.

I let out a sigh and searched him hé had a Glock in his holster but he didn't have any bullet. I didn't find any close-quarter weapon.

-"He must have been scared to fight at close-quarter, he was too lenient on a limited-use weapon, and he couldn't last long."

He also had some beef jerky.

I put the holster on my waist and put my gun, previously in my backpack in it.

Now i could take it out at any moment.

Maybe i should give it to Lena?

I looked in the mirror and shook my head.

No, sorry for her but it could Save my life in an emergency to give it up.

We joined together outside to share our finds:

-"I found a gun without ammo, this holster, and just a bit of food."

"Thankfully i found much more."

She opened the trash bag she was carrying.

-"There is food and water, i took his nail and hammer if we want to fortify our future bases and i even found a hand axe so we Can get some wood."

"It's already late let's sleep here for the night"

There are two bedrooms in the house but one is occupied by a corpse.

-"Take the room i'll take the couch."

"You can't, the door can't close anymore."

-"Right"

"Let's put the furniture back in the stairs case and share the bed."

Flustered i let out a dry couch.

-"I'll sleep on the floor, you take the bed."

"You sure?"

-"Yeah"

Day 23:

I woke up first at sunrise, the night wasn't comfortable as the floor was hard.

-"My back hurt."

I went down to check if any Zombies entered the garden in the night.

After i killed a wandering zombie, i started a fire and cooked breakfast for us.

Tck,tck,tck

-"Lana, Wake up i prepared breakfast, Come down outside when you are ready."

10 minutes later.

She joined me and we started to eat.

She spoke first:

"So what's the plan?"

-"We need to find a base, we can't stay here, the door can't even close."

"And the fence is breached."

-"There are a lot of houses that look like this one so we should find one that has fences and a door at some point"

And that's what we did, the house where we were was a row of about 6 houses.

**

We jumped the fence to avoid the road with a little bit more zombies to not exhaust ourselves.

We scavenged the houses on the way and we settled for the fourth house which had modern fences of about two meters.

"We can't climb it we need to go on the road there are not many zombies just three or four."

We went to the main road and cleaned it of six zombies.

The door to the front yard was open but the lock was intact.

When we saw this, knowing there might be zombies inside we put up our guard. I went to the right of the house and Lana to the left.

I carefully walked and at the corners of the house, a zombie jumped at me.

I dropped my weapon and the zombie fell on me. I struggled with the zombie with my hand on its neck the zombie was trying to bite my face and a black rotten liquid fell off his mouth on my face.

I took my gun and put it on its temple

"-----!"

Blood and brain splattered on the taintless grass, my ear was ringing, i was full of blood and i heard someone cry on the other side of the house, surely because of the shock my view darkened and i passed out.

Day 24:

I opened my eyes and was blinded by the sun coming through the window.

The ceiling was unfamiliar.

"My head hurt"

I Heard someone chopping wood outside.

I jumped from the bed and went out to meet Lana fervently chopping wood.

-"Hi"

"Oh, you are up, hello."

She said while wiping sweat from her forehead.

-"How much did i sleep ?"

"Almost an entire day, you must have needed it."

-"I see you cleaned it all alone, sorry."

"That's ok there was only one of them and you killed it."

-"So what do you think of this place?"

"It's safe, there is fences, a fireplace for eating and heating, and two bedrooms."

-"I'll clean up the house today, it's reality dusty."

"Ok, i'll barricade the windows."

She put down the axe and took the wood inside.

I looked around, verdant grass, blue Sky without any clouds i took a deep breath. The scenery is so calming, and the air seems purer than before, for a moment i almost forgot that the world was led by the dead.

Maybe it's because that's the countryside.

**

A routine took place, every other day we went out to loot and kill zombies but there were almost no zombies on the street anymore.

We had ample food at this point but we started to find less and less food the more we advanced into the city.

And on day 30:

We heard someone shouting.

"Helppp,helpp!"

When we heard this we started running down the road killing some zombies on the way. Then we saw someone with a wound on their arm running toward us. He had nothing on him but his clothes and five zombies were behind him.

For us, it wasn't a problem anymore with all the zombies we killed.

She used a hand axe and i used a machete to split their head.

When we were over with it we looked at the man groaning in the ground bleeding profusely on the ground.

I ran up to him and checked his wound.

-"It's a bite mark..."

Panicking i continued:

-"Oii when did you get bitten!"

He was in a daze, in pain.

I tore apart my sleeve and made a tourniquet on his upper arm.

I cleaned my blade, put it in the air, and as i was about to cut his arm.

"He is unconscious."

I checked his heartbeat and his breathing.

-"No... He is dead."

"Fuck... The first survivor we meet and he died."

I held my machete with trembling hands.

I knew what i needed to do.

I hesitated a minute but before i could kill it, an axe went through its skull.

I looked up at Lana, she was making a grave expression with tears on her cheeks.

-"Thank you and sorry... i should have finished him."

She didn't look at me and took her axe.

She walked toward our house.

"Let's go, that's enough for the day."

I looked at her back walking down the road, axe in her hand with fresh blood falling in the ground from it. She seemed lonely.

**

I took a shovel and started to make a grave in the garden next door.

I fetched the corpse and put it in the hole.

I took a minute and started filling up the hole again.

When i got back up i went to see Lena.

"You didn't have to bury him you know, we didn't even know him."

-"Yes but it seemed like the right thing to do, and you didn't have to finish him either but you did."
