Next Day
The soft rays of sunlight peeked through the open curtains, gently touching Blaze's face. He blinked at the sudden brightness, feeling a bit off as he moved in his chair. His body ached from sleeping in such an awkward spot—he was half-lying on the bed with his legs all scrunched up in the chair.
He hadn't slept much that night, keeping watch over Savannah. But he just couldn't bring himself to leave her. Every second he spent with her reminded him how much he cared about her. Now, seeing her so weak, it felt like the whole world was on his shoulders.
He looked at Savannah, still fast asleep. Her face was calm but pale. She was breathing steadily, but something about how still she was made his heart ache with worry. Gently, he touched her forehead. Her skin was warm but no longer burning up from fever. He felt a little relieved, but that didn't ease his guilt.
"I'm so sorry." he whispered, his voice thick with regret. He blamed himself for not making her rest and for letting her push herself too hard. "I should've known better." he thought. His hand stayed on her forehead as he pulled the blanket up to cover her, making sure she was warm and comfy.
"Wake up, Ana." he said softly, hoping she'd open her eyes. But she didn't move, sleeping peacefully. He watched her for a bit, but after a while, he knew he couldn't just sit there waiting forever. He needed to take care of himself too, for her sake.
He got up from the chair, stretched his aching muscles, and headed to the bathroom to freshen up. Splashing cold water on his face helped a bit, but he still felt worried.
After a while, Blaze came out of the bathroom looking a little better, but he was still uneasy. He grabbed a damp towel and quietly walked back to the bedroom. The doctor said she needed rest, and even though Blaze wanted her to wake up, he knew she needed time to get better. He gently dabbed her face with the cool towel, being extra careful not to disturb her.
Time seemed to drag on. He sat by her side for hours, keeping watch, but he still felt this heavy weight in his chest. He kept thinking there must be something else he could do, some detail he might have overlooked.
But for now, all he could do was be here, be patient, and wait for her to wake up.
When he finally got up, he headed down to the living area where Arthur was waiting. Arthur's face showed both worry and curiosity, but he didn't say a word as Blaze came closer.
"Boss, the investigation—" Arthur started, but Blaze cut him off right away. His voice was cold and short.
"Don't you know what to do, Arthur?" Blaze's tone was sharp, full of a threat that made the air feel heavy. "Or do I have to remind you?"
Arthur nodded fast, getting the message from Blaze's tone. Focus on what's important right now. Blaze didn't need to say more. Without another word, he turned and walked out of the room, heading toward the patio—the place where Savannah found peace, the spot where she often sat to think.
Blaze grabbed a handful of flowers from the colorful garden. The soft petals and bright colors gave him a brief smile, even though it didn't last long. He wanted to add some beauty to this gloomy moment, something to cheer up the place for Savannah when she woke up.
He went back inside the mansion, each step feeling heavy with his own thoughts. The halls were quiet, the silence almost creepy, but he knew exactly where he was going—straight to the bedroom.
Savannah was still asleep, just like the doctor said she would be. The room was quiet except for the gentle sound of her breathing, the only sign that she was still there with him. Blaze walked to her side, gently placing the flowers on the bedside table. His fingers touched the soft petals before he sat back down in the chair next to her.
Blaze stuck by her side for what felt like hours, watching over her like a guardian, his eyes never leaving her face. He still couldn't shake off the worry, but as time went on, he started feeling a bit better. She was going to wake up. He just knew it.
He gazed at her softly, noticing how her chest rose and fell with each breath, and how her lips curved slightly in peaceful sleep. He wanted to be the one to make her smile again and show her she didn't have to bear everything alone. She had him now, and he'd make sure of it.
So, he kept waiting. His presence was like a silent promise that no matter how long it took, he'd be right here. Waiting for the moment she'd wake up and come back to him.
After Sometime
At 9 PM, the mansion was dead silent. Blaze stood outside the bedroom, pacing the hall while on the phone. He sounded firm and decisive. Even though his voice was calm, you could tell he meant business. Inside the room, Savannah lay still on the bed, breathing steadily. Her face had regained some color.
She slowly woke up, her eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks. At first, everything was blurry, so she squinted and blinked until the room came into focus. She looked around, recognizing the familiar space. The soft lights gave the room a warm glow, highlighting the elegant furniture. This was their room—hers and Blaze's—a comforting thought.
Her eyes moved to the big window, but the curtains were closed, hiding whatever was outside. She figured it was still night time, since it was dark and there was no daylight to be seen. She searched the room for Blaze, her eyes scanning every corner, but he wasn't there.
She sat up slowly, feeling a quiet determination inside her. Her body was still tired, but she pushed through, moving carefully. Just as she managed to sit up a bit, the door opened and Blaze walked in.
"Ana." he called softly, relief clear on his face when he saw her awake. He hurried over, his movements quick but not rushed. "Let me help you." he said, his voice gentle as he helped her sit up, propping up some pillows behind her back.
"How are you feeling, Ana?" Blaze asked, his hand automatically checking her forehead for a fever. He felt a wave of relief when her temperature was back to normal.
Savannah gave a small, steady smile. "I'm feeling much better."
Blaze let out a breath, looking both relieved and worried. He sat next to her, took her hand, and gently rubbed his thumb over her palm. "Why do you overwork yourself like this?" he asked, his voice a blend of concern and reproach.
"I don't overwork." Savannah said, her voice both defensive and calm. "I just do my part."
Blaze shook his head, clearly not buying it. "Just so you know, you're not the only surgeon here in the hospital." he said, his tone firm but kind.
Savannah's lips curved into a bright smile. "I know. But I'm good at what I do." she said, her voice full of pride and a bit of playful defiance.
Blaze chuckled, even though he didn't want to. "Yeah, you are." he agreed, his face softening. "But you're going to take a break for a few days."
Savannah's smile disappeared, replaced by a puzzled look. "What do you mean?" she asked, her eyebrows furrowing.
"I mean you're taking a real break." Blaze said firmly. "For a few days."
Savannah's face dropped, a hint of guilt crossing her features. "Blaze, I can't." she argued. "I've already taken so many breaks. It's not fair to the others who are working just as much as me."
Blaze moved closer and cupped her cheek, his thumb gently touching her skin. It was so tender that it softened her resolve. "I'm the chairman, remember? I get to decide everything, honey." he said with a teasing grin.
Savannah's lips tightened, and she looked annoyed. "Blaze." she warned.
He laughed at her reaction, clearly finding it amusing. "Get well soon, Ana." he said softly. "And I'll make sure your coworkers get some time off too. Deal?"
Her eyes opened wide, and she seemed surprised. "Really?" she asked, her voice full of hope and doubt.
Blaze nodded and leaned in closer. "Yes, Ana." he whispered, his gaze warm and steady. He gave her a soft kiss on the lips. But when he pulled back, Savannah frowned.
"She might catch whatever I have." she said, her voice tinged with worry.
Blaze's face lit up with a playful grin as he leaned closer, his hand gently cradling the back of her head. "I wouldn't mind." he murmured, his voice soft and teasing, before pressing his lips to hers in a deeper kiss. He felt a rush of relief and happiness now that she was awake and talking.
Savannah blushed and put her hands on his chest. "Blaze..." she started, but he kissed her again, this time more softly, full of love and comfort.
He pulled back, their foreheads touching. "I'm just glad you're awake." he said sincerely. For the first time in days, he felt a bit lighter.
Blaze stood close to Savannah, his forehead touching hers gently. Her skin, which had been hot and feverish, now felt cool and normal. It was a relief he really appreciated. For a moment, it felt like time had slowed down, and all that mattered was that she was awake and talking to him.
Savannah gave a small smile, her fingers lightly touching his where they lay on the bed. "You worry too much." she said softly, her voice full of affection but also a little scolding.
Blaze stepped back a bit, his dark eyes locked on hers, showing both tenderness and frustration. "How could I not, Ana?" he asked, his voice low and serious. "Do you know how bad you looked when I found you at the door? You could hardly stand. You scared me."
Savannah's gaze wavered, her fingers fiddling with the edge of the blanket. She knew she'd pushed herself too far, but she still felt responsible for her patients. "I didn't mean to scare you." she said softly. "But I just couldn't walk away from those people. They needed me."
Blaze let out a breath, ran his hand through his hair, and got up. He started pacing, his fists clenched by his sides. "What about me, Savannah?" he asked, his voice getting louder before he calmed down. "Don't you think I need you too? Seeing you like that, so pale and weak… I can't go through that again."
Hearing the emotion in his voice, Savannah's heart ached. She always looked up to Blaze's strength, but seeing him so exposed made her realize how much she mattered to him. "I'm sorry." she whispered.
Blaze stopped pacing and faced her. His expression softened when he saw how sincere she was. He walked over in a few big steps and sat down next to her, holding her hand again. "I'm not trying to stop you from doing what you love." he said, his thumb making little circles on her palm. "But you need to look after yourself too. You can't help anyone if you're worn out."
Savannah nodded slowly, feeling a lump in her throat. "I'll try." she said, her voice shaking a bit. "I'll be more careful."
"That's all I want." Blaze replied, leaning in to kiss her forehead. "And for now, you're going to rest. No arguing."
A small smile played on Savannah's lips, showing a hint of her usual stubbornness. "You're so bossy." she teased, but there was no real annoyance in her words.
Blaze chuckled, a low and warm sound. "It comes with the job," he said, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "Are you hungry? You haven't eaten since yesterday."
Savannah's stomach rumbled, and she laughed softly, her cheeks turning pink. "I guess I could go for some food." she said.
Blaze stood up, his usual commanding air back as he grabbed his phone. "I'll have something light bring up here." he said, already tapping away. "Don't push yourself too much yet."
Savannah watched him, feeling both fondness and amusement. Even now, Blaze's protective side was clear. When he finished the call and came back to her, she reached out and took his hand. "Thanks." she said, her voice full of gratitude.
Blaze sat down next to her again, holding her hand. "For what?"
"For everything." Savannah said, her eyes meeting his. "For taking care of me, for always being here... for loving me."
Blaze's face softened, and he leaned in to give her a gentle kiss on the forehead. "Always, Ana." he whispered. "Always."
A knock on the door interrupted the quiet moment. Blaze got up to get the food that had been delivered and placed it carefully on the bedside table, arranging it like it was fine china.
"Eat." he said softly, handing her a spoon.
Savannah laughed at his insistence but took the spoon. His warmth and the food helped her feel stronger. As she ate, Blaze sat next to her, watching her with a tender look that said it all. Even while recovering, Savannah felt like the luckiest woman alive.
The night went on with quiet moments of togetherness and love. For now, everything else could wait.
As Savannah finished her light meal, Blaze took the tray from her lap and set it on the bedside table. She leaned back against the fluffy pillows, feeling a bit stronger but much happier. Blaze sat down next to her again, his eyes never leaving her face.
"Hey, you don't have to stare at me like I'm about to disappear." Savannah said with a soft laugh.
Blaze gave a little smile but kept looking at her. "I can't help it. Seeing you like that... I just want to make sure you're really alright."
Savannah reached for his hand, her fingers wrapping around his. "I am alright. A lot of that is because of you. You always take care of me, even when I'm too stubborn to admit I need it."
Blaze kissed her knuckles gently. "Somebody's got to look after you, Ana. You tend to forget to look after yourself."
Savannah smiled, feeling all warm inside when he spoke. "I'll try to do better. I promise."
"Good." Blaze said firmly. "I won't let you work yourself to death again. I talked to your boss at the hospital. You're officially on leave for the next two weeks."
Savannah's eyes went wide. "Blaze! You didn't—"
"I did." he cut her off, his voice leaving no room for discussion. "And before you say anything, this isn't just for you. It's for me too. I can't focus knowing you're overworking yourself."
Savannah sighed, but her lips curled up in a half-amused smile. "You're impossible."
Blaze grinned. "That's why you love me."
She chuckled softly, the sound soothing him. He leaned in, pressing his forehead to hers. "You scared me, Ana. I never want to feel that way again."
Savannah's laughter died down, and she held his face in her hands. "I'm sorry." she murmured. "I didn't mean to. It's just that I get so wrapped up in trying to help others."
Blaze closed his eyes, took a deep breath, then pulled back a little to look at her. "That's one of the things I love about you. But you can't give from an empty cup. You need some rest and to recharge. Promise me you'll let me take care of you for a bit."
Savannah paused for a second before nodding. "I promise."
Blaze seemed relieved. "Good. Now, let's get you settled for the night. You need to rest."
Savannah gave a small frown. "I've been resting all day."
"Yeah, but you're going to rest all night too." Blaze said, getting up to fluff the pillows behind her.
"Doctor's orders. Or in this case, Blaze's orders."
She rolled her eyes playfully but let him take care of her. Once he made sure she was comfy, Blaze turned off most of the lights, leaving just the soft lamp next to the bed. He sat back down in his chair next to her, his fingers gently touching hers as he held her hand.
"Aren't you going to bed?" Savannah asked, tilting her head a bit.
Blaze shook his head. "I'm staying here."
"Blaze, you don't have to—"
"I want to." he said, his voice soft but strong. "Go to sleep, Ana. I'll be right here."
Savannah looked at him for a moment then gave in. She squeezed his hand and closed her eyes, feeling better with him there until she fell asleep.
Hours went by, and Blaze stayed by her side, holding her hand the whole time. He watched her sleep, finding comfort in the gentle rise and fall of her chest. He thought about the life they were building together, the challenges they had faced, and the love
that bound them.
When the clock struck midnight, Blaze finally allowed himself to relax, leaning back in the chair. His eyes grew heavy, and he drifted into a light sleep, still holding Savannah's hand.
For the first time in days, the mansion felt warm and calm, as if the world outside had paused just for them. Blaze knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, as they always did. And for now, that was enough.
