She Is For Me

Arthur Kent's Point of View

She had refused to pick up his call in the last ten days. His fingers drummed on the top of his desk as he stared at the blank laptop screen, he had just finished a meeting and waited for the report from his secretary when his phone rang.

"Hello-"

"For a moment I thought you were going to bail." He said in relief as he heard her voice.

"What's taking so long?"

"You seem to be in a hurry Kent, can't wait to have me?" She teased with a glint.

"Delusional, I don't think that's bad. Why have you been ignoring me, Macy?"

"Nothing." She replied quietly but Arthur was sure it wasn't just nothing. "When can we meet to talk about the arrangement?" There was something urgent in her voice and she was trying so hard to keep it under.

"Macy, don't lie to me. Why are you suddenly in a haste after ghosting me-"

"I didn't ghost you-" she paused and released a slow sigh. "I just needed some time to think."

"Right, a heartbreak needs to be thoroughly thought through." He snickered but she remained silent. He cursed himself for the insensitive comment but didn't admit it to Macy.

"I can come pick you up later this evening for dinner." He said as his door opened and his secretary walked in and dropped a file on his desk and he dismissed her.

"You want to take me out for dinner?" She asked with a scoff. "And yet you called me delusional, you know I'd rather starve than sit down on a table and share a meal with you."

"Right. If we need to sell the idea of getting married, we might as well show that we don't hate each other." He said. He was sure that someone would see them and start the rumour which is easier than showing up at a wedding.

"Okay, I think that's reasonable."

"Great, I'll come pick you up by six." He ended the call cutting off her outlandish reply. He wasn't sure if Macy's previous relationship had made it to the news, he was the last person to pry into Macy's life after what happened between them but he had to make sure he would be able to control whatever damage was done for the sake of his goal.

He scrolled through the pages that appeared on the screen, there wasn't much news about them except from a year ago when they were walking side by side and a video of them kissing. It annoyed me to see her let the douche touch her, let alone hold her like that.

The door to his office banged open as his friend, Jared walked in with his hands wide open in a prolific gesture.

"Nothing beats having to see the bloody traffic ag- you're mad about something," Jared asked, taking the seat opposite his friend.

"I'm not." He replied, tucking his phone away as he leaned back in his chair and stared at his friend with a smirk. "You didn't tell me you were coming in today."

"Well surprise," he wiggled his hands with a goofy smile. "I didn't want to but I missed my best bud and wanted some time away from the quiet. It's brain damage."

"Most people I know would kill for the silence, yet you pick chaos."

"What do you know? I love the drama it brings, speaking about drama. I heard the Cox are in town for a while, do you know how huge that is?" Yep, Arthur was very much aware which is why he wanted to make this thing work at all cost.

"You know what, I also heard that Sylvester Cox is a family man- he's a sucker for loyalty and commitment to the very last. In a way, he reminds me of you know who-" Arthur nodded slowly, he was aware of who Jared was speaking about.

"That aside, how about we go have dinner with Hillary, she's back and-" "I can't." He replied, taking Jared by surprise.

"What?"

"I can't, I have plans."

"During dinner time? Wait a minute, don't tell me you're going to see a woman."

"I'm not going to see a woman." He declared but Jared could tell he was lying.

"Who is she? Why are you seeing a woman all of a sudden that you need to take her for dinner? Since when did you begin to try wooing a woman with dinner?"

"Calm down, you're going to have a vein popped out."

"That's because you're making it hard by making me think about who the person might be."

"It's Lockwood."

"Lockwood? This has to be some silly joke right?" Arthur sighed, he expected his friend's reaction to be like this. Jared was aware of Arthur's and Macy's long beef, he had watched the two hate each other to stupor and now he was hearing that they were going out for dinner.

"It has to be another Macy, right?"

"No, it's the one and only." Jared stared at his friend like he had lost his mind but Casey stepped inside with a bright smile on her face.

"Jared! You're in town!" She noticed the confusion written on his brows. "What's going on?"

"Did you know Arthur was taking a,"

"Jared," Arthur cut him off in a warning tone. "What is Arthur taking?" Casey asked, confused.

"Nothing, cancel the rest of my meeting for today and make sure you check in with Joanne for the file she submitted. I won't be able to go through it." He said as he rose to his feet and buttoned his jacket. Jared crossed his hands over his chest as he noticed his friend's gaze warning him not to say anything.

..............

The clock on the dash blinked 5:53 PM as he pulled up to Macy's apartment. A leaden sky mirrored his mood. Why hadn't he waited a little longer?

Heaving a sigh, he parked and gripped the steering wheel, frustration warring with a flicker of unease. He couldn't let Macy know he'd been early, but then a figure emerged from the building – a man he'd sworn never to see again.

"What the hell is he doing here?" The thought ripped through him as he abandoned his pretence of nonchalance, flinging open the car door. Strides ate the distance to the building, Macy's strained voice a growing counterpoint to his pounding heart.

"I told you to leave me alone David,"

"Who the hell are you dressed up for?" David hissed at her as neither of them had seen him.

"I don't see how that is your problem, David." Arthur sneered from behind them.
