MACY Point of View
What? The question splayed boldly inside her head like a loud gong.
"You don't mean that you can't do that. She belongs to me." David's words skipped in bits of mockery. "Macy isn't yours, she hates your guts and would rather remain single than,"
"It's not an option." Arthur pressed and without sparing a glance in her direction, David didn't try to stop them this time, he wasn't going to cause a scene, especially with Arthur Kent in the picture.
His large hands were comforting against her cold ones, her feet followed without hesitation and her brain was in a turmoil of questions and regrets. She stared at Arthur who was leading her gently, he slowed his long strides to accommodate hers and it was the strangest thing ever.
Arthur Kent, the man who she had vowed never to be with for any reason, was beyond a romantic relationship. It was a beef that extended to all areas of life yet here he was defending her, from the one she didn't expect betrayal from.
"Keep your head up Mace, you don't want people hovering around you." Arthur reminded her as they walked, some eyes followed the two but everywhere remained calm still. She didn't bother to check if David was okay, it didn't matter anyways. He was done with her and she was alone- unless Arthur really meant what he said.
"Arthur " she muttered as she pulled her wrist away from his grip. He stopped and faced her with his head tilted slightly. "You don't mean that, do you?"
He sighed knowing fully well what she asked.
"I," he didn't get to say exactly as he wanted as Neila came into view.
"Arthur! There you are! My Father was wondering where you went off to." Neila Cox moved next to Arthur and then her gaze landed on Macy who was trying hard to keep a bright smile on her face.
"You are?"
"Macy." she replied. "My name is Macy Lockwood."
"Ouh, I love your dress it's simple and elegant. Not to mention it fits your body type." she cooed as her eyes raked over Macy's dress. "Are you perhaps into fashion?"
"I just like to wear dresses." Macy replied with a soft chuckle.
"Arthur, you didn't tell me that you had a female friend interested in things like this- I don't know why he keeps hiding people like you." Neila stated with a low laugh.
"Well since you're here," he grabbed Macy's hands and intertwined their fingers. Neila's brows scrunched for a few seconds before her mouth dropped opened.
"Oh my God, you two are a thing!" she squealed, gaining the attention of the people close by.
Macy wasn't sure how to react, if she should tell Neila it was all a flux but then that would mean jeopardising her entire mission.
"Yes, we are both secretly dating and will be married soon." She added playing along as she leaned into Arthur's arm. It was strange again, to show physical affection especially after getting her heart broken to the person she had given her all to.
"Congratulations guys- you two look great together." Neila gushed as Macy tried to calm her breathing. Slyvester Cox happened to come around.
"Daddy- you'll never guess what? Arthur and Macy have been secretly dating and will be getting married soon, isn't that sweet?" Sylvester Cox seemed taken aback by the news but smiled at the both of them. "Isn't that lovely? I didn't realise David's best worker would be engaged to someone like you- what are the odds?"
Macy wanted to correct him, she hated being labelled like that especially with everything she had done but something didn't always go as planned so remained quiet.
"Macy isn't just a great worker, she's a phenomenal woman who knows how to make things work and I mean anything." Arthur praised and Macy felt her inside grow warm.
Was this Arthur Kent publicly admitting that she was great at what she does?
"That's great, well I look forward to seeing you two more often, Neila, invite them for your aunts wedding. I'm sure she'll love to see what you don't have yet." He said to his daughter and planted a kiss to the side of her head. Arthur and Macy excused themselves after speaking with Slyvester a bit more.
"Goodnight Neila, thank you so much for today." Arthur said as they walked away.
They ended up walking side by side until they were sure no one else was there to see them.
"What the hell?!" Macy snapped as her glare burned into Arthur's head. "Marry you?"
"Is that what your problem is now?"
"You don't see it as a problem?" She folded her arms over her chest as she waited for his response.
"I'm trying to save you her." The word set her off and she stomped towards him and jabbed her finger into his chest.
"I don't need your saving or pity! I'm fine." She sneered and pulled away from him but Arthur was coming for her.
"You're not! Don't try to hide it Macy, I can clearly see it written all over you." He wasn't going to let her win this one, he wasn't going to let her lie to herself.
"You don't have to put this big girl act around me," he said calmly this time with his shoulders slumped.
"I don't need you or your help. I AM FINE." She said through tight lips but she was avoiding his eyes. "I broke up with my stupid fiancée because he was cheating on me and I'm not going to let it weigh me down."
Macy didn't want to argue or fight but it came naturally, like it always has for her to defend herself. To protect herself from the harm that comes with it.
"Fine, I don't care if your stupid heart got broken again," he said and stepped closer but Macy remained still. It was only a matter of space and she wasn't giving up.
"What I do care about is an opportunity that has presented itself," he stopped and his cologne hit her nose again, she was self-aware of how it made her feel now that they were alone together.
"You mean the Cox?"
"Yes. The Cox and I know that you need their partnership as I do them," he clarified but Macy frowned.
"So?"
"We're going to do as we said, even as I hate to say it but we are actually going to get married."
