Chapter 20 Marriage is not a business

"So, who are you?" Shen Mofei could clearly feel the hostility from the other person and slightly lifted her eyes to meet Yao Yutong's gaze.

"I am Mingze's girlfriend. We've been in love for six years. We not only come from matching backgrounds, but our relationship has always been sweet. I believe Miss Shen is a smart person. A forced relationship is never sweet, and a marriage without love cannot last. This time, he acted on impulse and got a marriage certificate with a stranger because he cares too much about me..."

Shen Mofei interrupted, "Once the certificate is issued, we are husband and wife. Do you think it's appropriate for you to say these things to me now?" She rarely interrupted others, but the disdain and contempt in this woman's eyes made her very uncomfortable. Moreover, from what she understood from Huo Mingze, this woman had no intention of marrying him in the first place. She didn't want to marry him before, and now that Huo Mingze was married, she came to claim her territory. This was the typical twisted personality of 'not cherishing what you have, and wanting to take it back once lost.'

Seeing that Shen Mofei was not easy to talk to, Yao Yutong was not annoyed and smiled, "So, I said, you can name your price. How about 300,000 yuan? With the money, both your father and your brother can get treatment." When she returned to the country, she had asked Lu Assistant about Shen Mofei's situation. Her family was poor, sick, and struggling to make ends meet. It would take her ten years to save 300,000 yuan.

"Marriage is not a transaction. Goodbye!" Shen Mofei stood up to leave. She didn't have deep feelings for Huo Mingze, but they were legally married. From the moment she got the marriage certificate, she told herself that she must work hard to manage her marriage. Huo Mingze had been kind to her, and if it were Huo Mingze asking for a divorce, saying he wanted to go back, she would agree. But she would not accept it from his ex-girlfriend.

"Miss Shen, he will never love you," Yao Yutong shouted as Shen Mofei left.

"That is our own business," Mofei replied, turning back and leaving directly.

"Miss Shen!" Yao Yutong called out again.

"Anything else?" Shen Mofei turned to look at Yao Yutong.

"He hasn't taken you to meet his family yet, has he?" Yao Yutong asked. She was sitting while Shen Mofei was standing, but even sitting, her gaze was condescending. Her chin was raised, radiating a superior air: "Miss Shen, you are a smart person. You should understand why he hasn't introduced you to his family despite being married. By the way, six years ago, he was the one who pursued me. As soon as we confirmed our relationship, he couldn't wait to take me to meet his family..."

"I'm quite busy and have no time to listen to your past. Goodbye!" Mofei reminded Yao Yutong that no matter how good they were, it was in the past.

Yao Yutong smiled, "Miss Shen, if you change your mind, call the number from earlier. I'll keep the 300,000 yuan for you." She believed that as long as Shen Mofei was a bit sensible, she would choose the money.

Shen Mofei said nothing more and left the coffee shop directly. She walked along the road, reached a zebra crossing, and prepared to cross as the light turned green. Her phone rang. It was Huo Mingze. She retracted her step and answered the phone, "Hello."

Ah— Screech—

A car sped past her, hitting a woman, who let out a tragic scream, followed by the sound of the car's emergency braking.

She felt a gust of wind and instinctively looked up, seeing a shocking pool of blood. The woman lay on the ground, her body twitching once before going still. Blood continued to gush out from beneath her head. The driver had already gotten out to check on the woman's condition. Shen Mofei was terrified. If she hadn't stepped back to take the call just now, would she be the one lying in that pool of blood?

"Mofei, Mofei!" Huo Mingze's urgent voice came through the phone.

"Huo Mingze..." Mofei's tears started to fall upon hearing his anxious voice.

"Don't move, wait for me!" Huo Mingze breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing Mofei's voice. He had planned to come over and discuss with her about visiting his parents once her father and brother's conditions stabilized. Additionally, there was a business event the day after tomorrow, and he wanted her to accompany him. In the future, his wife would need to stand by his side. When he saw her waiting for the light to change, he decided to call her.

"Okay," Mofei responded. She quickly hung up the phone and called for an ambulance. Two or three pedestrians had gathered by the road, attempting to perform CPR, but they realized the woman was already gone. Each of them sighed, lamenting the fragility of life.

Soon, a familiar Chevrolet came into view. Huo Mingze parked a few meters away and quickly walked over to her, immediately grabbing her shoulders to check if she was alright.

"I'm fine," Mofei said, her eyes red. The car accident had left a deep psychological impact on her, and she was still shaken, her heart beating irregularly.

"That's good," Huo Mingze said, pulling her into his arms. Mofei suddenly wrapped her arms tightly around his waist. She was genuinely scared. The shock of life and death had left her trembling. Just now, she had thought, what would happen to her father if she died? What about her brother? Would her newlywed husband Huo Mingze be sad?

"It's okay now," Huo Mingze said, sensing her fear, as he patted her back and held her tighter. He glanced at the vehicle and driver involved in the accident—a pickup truck. The driver appeared to be around forty years old. Typically, such an experienced driver wouldn't make such a basic mistake. This wasn't an emergency turn or an intersection, not a frequent accident spot. Squinting slightly, he made a note of the license plate number.

"Why are you here?" he asked Mofei.

"We'll talk about it later," Mofei replied.

"Alright, back to the hospital?" Huo Mingze asked.

"Yes," Mofei answered. Huo Mingze guided her to the car, opening the door for her himself. Mofei tried to turn her head to look at the accident scene, but Huo Mingze gently held her head, saying, "Don't look!"

Once in the car, Huo Mingze drove back to the hospital. As they walked towards the hospital building, Mofei said to Huo Mingze, "Earlier, a headhunter arranged to meet with me, but it turned out to be your ex-girlfriend."

She didn't mean to tattle; she just felt that some things needed to be clarified with him.

Huo Mingze's eyes narrowed instantly. Did Yao Yutong cause the accident? He had wondered why there would be an accident on such a sidewalk. He asked Mofei, "What did she say to you?"

Worried that Yao Yutong might try to create discord, he added, "Mofei, I have no relationship with her anymore. We broke up, and neither now nor in the future will I have anything to do with her."

Mofei stopped in her tracks and looked up at Huo Mingze.
