Chapter Six

Sheriff Gallagher sits at his desk, sipping his coffee, as he waits for the autopsy report on Veronica's body. When it finally arrives, he scans the pages, his eyes widening as he read the findings.

"No signs of forced entry or struggle," he mutters to himself. "Veronica knew her killer."

But it is the toxicology report that catches his attention. "No drugs or alcohol in her system...and the message on the cardboard wasn't written by the killer."

Gallagher's mind races. Who wrote the message, and why?

He calls his team together, assigning tasks. "Get me a list of Veronica's close friends and the last people she was seen with. I want to interview them all."

The list yields four names: identical twins, Debby and Lizzie, and Dana Cook, the mayor's daughter.

Gallagher starts with the twins, who arrived at the station together, their similarities unnerving. They answer his questions in unison, their responses rehearsed and filled with sobs.

"Did Veronica have any enemies?" Gallagher asked.

"No, I mean she was nasty to some people. Even us. But no one wanted her dead,”they chimed.

"Any conflicts within the group?"

"No, but sometimes she argues with Dana over who the boss was."

Gallagher's frustration grows.

Next up is Dana Cook, who saunters in, confident and poised. Gallagher sensed a cunning intellect behind her polished smile.

"So, Dana, tell me about Veronica," he began.

Dana's response is measured, cautious. "We hung out, partied...nothing out of the ordinary."

Gallagher presses on. "Any idea who might have wanted Veronica dead?"

Dana's eyes narrows. "No, Sheriff. But I'm sure you'll figure it out."

“The twins said the two of you argued. A lot.”

“Friends argue. It's normal.”

“Where were you on the night she died?”

“My dad threw a formal party that night. I was there.”

As the interview concludes, Gallagher felt like he was no closer to the truth. The twins had frustrated his efforts, and Dana had expertly deflected his questions.

Sheriff Gallagher's next interview is one he dreads - his own son, Coleson. Coleson and Veronica had a tumultuous relationship, and Gallagher knew his son's temper had gotten the better of him in the past.

"Coleson, come on down to the station. We need to talk," Gallagher says, trying to sound calm.

Coleson arrives, his eyes cast downward, knowing what this is about.

"Dad, I know what you're thinking, but I didn't hurt Veronica," Coleson says, his voice laced with defensiveness.

"I'm just trying to get to the truth, son," Gallagher replies, his tone firm but measured. "Tell me about your relationship with Veronica."

Coleson sighs. "We were intense, passionate...but also volatile. We fought a lot. And then she broke up with me for that moron."

"Did you ever hurt her?"

Coleson hesitates before answering. "I pushed her once, during a fight. But I never meant to hurt her."

Gallagher's gut twists with concern. He knew his son's temper was a problem.

"Was that the reason to want Veronica dead?"

Coleson’s eyes snaps up, anger flashing. "No, Dad! I loved her, despite everything. I would never hurt her like that."

Gallagher studies his son's face, searching for any sign of deception. He sees pain, regret, but no guilt.

"Coleson, I need to ask...where were you the night Veronica died?"

Coleson’s eyes drop again. "I was with friends, at a party. You can ask them, they'll vouch for me."

Gallagher nods, making a mental note to verify Coleson's alibi.

As the interview ends, Gallagher feels a mix of emotions - concern for his son, and a determination to uncover the truth, no matter where it leads.
