The following morning, Haruki found himself once again on the practice range, the early dawn light casting long shadows across the field. He focused on his target, drawing his bowstring back and letting the arrow fly. It hit just outside the bullseye, and he frowned, knowing he could do better.
"Still aiming for perfection, I see," a familiar voice called out.
Haruki turned to see Aiko approaching, her own bow slung over her shoulder. "Morning, Aiko," he greeted with a smile. "Couldn't sleep?"
"Something like that," she replied, setting up her station next to his. "Figured I might as well get some practice in. Plus, I wanted to take you up on your offer."
Haruki nodded, stepping aside to give her room. "Glad to have the company. Let's see what you've got."
Aiko took her stance, her movements precise and fluid. She drew back her bowstring and released, the arrow flying straight and true, hitting the bullseye dead center. Haruki couldn't help but be impressed.
"Nice shot," he said, genuinely admiring her skill.
"Thanks," Aiko replied, a small smile playing on her lips. "I've had a lot of practice."
They continued practicing in comfortable silence, occasionally offering tips and encouragement to each other. After a while, the rest of their friends began to arrive.
"Look who's here early for once!" Riku called out, his goofy grin already in place. "And with a new friend, no less!"
Mei and Kenta followed, Mei waving cheerfully while Kenta offered a nod of acknowledgment. Riku bounded over, his energy contagious. "Hey, Aiko! Ready for round two of 'Meet the Goofball Crew'?"
Aiko laughed, her earlier nervousness melting away. "Bring it on, Riku. I'm ready."
Riku dramatically placed a hand over his heart. "You're in for a treat. We're quite the characters."
Mei joined in, her bubbly personality adding to the mix. "We really are. But don't worry, Aiko, we're mostly harmless."
Kenta smirked, always ready with a sarcastic comment. "Except when Riku tries to cook. Then all bets are off."
Riku feigned offense, throwing his hands up. "Hey, my cooking isn't that bad! It's… unique."
Haruki shook his head, laughing. "If by unique you mean inedible, then sure."
They all laughed, the camaraderie easing any lingering tension. Haruki watched as Aiko relaxed, joining in the jokes and banter with ease. It was good to see her fitting in so well.
"So, Aiko," Mei began, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Any embarrassing archery stories to share? We've all got one."
Aiko thought for a moment before grinning. "Well, there was this one time I was so focused on my shot that I didn't notice my shoelace was untied. I tripped, shot the arrow straight up, and had to dive out of the way when it came back down."
Riku burst out laughing. "Now that's a good one! I once tried to impress a girl by shooting an apple off a fence post. Missed completely and hit the fence. The apple didn't even move."
Kenta snorted. "Yeah, and you had a bruise on your shoulder for a week from the recoil."
Mei giggled, shaking her head. "I got my hair caught in my bowstring once. Thought I was going to have to cut it off."
Haruki smiled, enjoying the light-hearted exchange. "I guess we've all had our moments. Just part of the learning process."
They continued sharing stories and jokes, the practice session turning into a fun bonding experience. Haruki felt a sense of contentment, knowing that despite the challenges ahead, they had each other's backs.
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, they decided to take a break. The group sprawled out on the grass, enjoying the warm breeze and each other's company.
"So, Aiko," Riku said, breaking the comfortable silence. "What do you think of Yamato so far?"
Aiko looked thoughtful. "It's different from my old school, but in a good way. Everyone's been really welcoming, and the facilities are top-notch. I'm looking forward to the competitions."
Kenta nodded. "You'll fit right in. Just watch out for Riku's pranks. He's always up to something."
Riku grinned, waggling his eyebrows. "Hey, a little mischief keeps things interesting."
Mei sighed dramatically. "As long as it doesn't involve food coloring in our water bottles again."
Haruki chuckled, feeling a sense of happiness. "Welcome to the team, Aiko. We're glad to have you."
"Thanks, guys," Aiko said, her smile bright. "I'm glad to be here."
