The excitement was palpable as the academy's first internal tournament of the year approached. Banners and posters decorated the hallways, and students buzzed with anticipation. Haruki and Aiko were both preparing intensely, each driven by their competitive spirits.
On the morning of the tournament, the group gathered at the range, their usual spot. Riku was in high spirits, as usual, bouncing around with an energy that was almost exhausting to watch.
"Today's the day, folks!" Riku announced, throwing an arm around Haruki's shoulder. "You ready to show Aiko who's boss?"
Haruki smirked, adjusting his grip on his bow. "Just you wait. Aiko doesn't stand a chance."
Aiko, overhearing their conversation, walked over with a confident stride. "Is that so, Haruki? I hope you're not underestimating me."
Mei rolled her eyes, nudging Kenta. "Here we go again. These two are like oil and water in competitions."
Kenta nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, but it's fun to watch. They bring out the best in each other."
Haruki and Aiko exchanged playful glares, the friendly rivalry evident in their eyes. Riku, sensing an opportunity, jumped between them. "How about a little wager, huh? Loser buys drinks for the winner!"
Aiko raised an eyebrow. "Drinks? How about the loser has to wear a silly hat for a week?"
Haruki laughed. "Deal. I hope you like looking ridiculous, Aiko."
She grinned back. "We'll see about that."
As they prepared for their respective matches, Mei and Kenta offered words of encouragement. "Just remember to stay focused and have fun," Mei said, patting Aiko on the back.
Kenta, in his usual deadpan manner, added, "And try not to trip over your shoelaces."
Riku, ever the joker, mimed a dramatic bow. "May the best archer win. And by that, I mean Haruki, of course."
Haruki rolled his eyes. "Thanks for the support, Riku."
The tournament began, and the archers took their positions. Haruki and Aiko were in different brackets, so they wouldn't face each other until later rounds. The early matches went smoothly, both of them advancing without much trouble.
When it was finally time for Haruki and Aiko to compete against each other, the atmosphere grew tense. Spectators whispered among themselves, speculating about the outcome.
Mei and Kenta took seats in the front row, while Riku wandered off to find snacks. "This is going to be good," Mei said, leaning forward in her seat.
"Yeah," Kenta agreed. "Let's see if Haruki can keep his cool."
Riku returned, juggling an assortment of snacks and drinks. "Got the best seat in the house for this showdown!"
Haruki and Aiko stepped onto the range, their bows at the ready. The signal was given, and they began. Each shot was precise, calculated, and intense. The crowd watched in awe as the two friends-turned-rivals showcased their skills.
Riku couldn't help but commentate. "And there goes Haruki with another perfect shot! But wait, Aiko's not backing down either! This is neck and neck, folks!"
Mei giggled, nudging Kenta. "He should be a sports commentator."
Kenta smirked. "He's definitely got the enthusiasm for it."
The match continued, both Haruki and Aiko matching each other arrow for arrow. With the final shot approaching, the tension was at its peak. Haruki took a deep breath, aimed, and released. His arrow landed just shy of the bullseye.
Aiko followed, her focus unwavering. Her arrow flew straight and true, hitting the bullseye with a satisfying thud. The crowd erupted in cheers.
Riku jumped up, nearly spilling his snacks. "Aiko wins! Haruki, get ready to wear that silly hat!"
Haruki sighed, but couldn't help but smile. He walked over to Aiko, extending his hand. "Good match. Looks like I owe you drinks and a week of embarrassment."
Aiko shook his hand, her smile genuine. "You put up a good fight, Haruki. This was fun."
As they left the range, Riku draped an arm around Haruki's shoulders. "Don't worry, buddy. You'll look great in that hat. Besides, you did great out there."
Mei and Kenta joined them, Mei offering a high-five to Aiko. "Congratulations! That was amazing."
Kenta nodded in agreement. "Yeah, you both did really well. Can't wait to see what happens in the next tournament."
Haruki laughed, already planning his revenge for the next round. "Next time, Aiko. I'll be ready."
Aiko grinned. "I'll be waiting."
The day ended with the friends celebrating at their favorite hangout spot, the competition already a fond memory. The bond between them strengthened by their shared experiences and friendly rivalry. The future promised more challenges, but with friends like these, Haruki knew he was ready for anything.
