Chapter 55

Harper let out a soft sigh. She really shouldn't have gotten her hopes up for him. Why hadn't she learned her lesson? He had so many people by his side, so of course he wouldn't need her company.

Harper, get a hold of yourself.

She turned to Jaylani. "Let's go home. I'm tired."

Jaylani studied Harper's face. She knew Harper had been trying to play it cool, but she noticed the pained look in her eyes. It made her heart ache for her friend.

"Okay, let's go back," Jaylani replied softly. She offered Harper a hand and helped her stand up from the bench. But Harper's body was numb from sitting for so long, and she took two steps before her knees buckled, making her stumble.

Just then, a hand grabbed her wrist and helped her regain her balance.

"It's better if I help her," Khai's voice said from behind her.

Jaylani hesitated but let go of Harper's other hand. She wasn't capable of carrying Harper in her high heels, so she might as well have Khai do it instead.
