On the plane, Della cupped the champagne-filled glass in her hand and gently swirled it around.

"Khai has it all planned, so don't worry about it," Della replied, glancing sideways at him. "He's made some arrangements, and he's leaving us after the plane lands." She then met Harper's gaze and rested her chin on her hand. "I'm more curious about Harper's life. Why haven't you ever asked your parents where you came from?"

Harper smiled bitterly. "What's there to ask? I grew up with an abusive father. I wanted to survive as long as I could. If I ask about my origins, it wouldn't lead to anything other than a beating."

Jaylani was aware of the bad things Harper had gone through and winced at her words.

"You've had a hard life," Jaylani said quietly. "If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, it would really be hard for me to believe that there are still such shameless and horrible people in this world."
