Cedric was not a cruel person, but he did have an ironclad rule of solving issues from the root. He watched the corpse of the fae being placed on the ground by his shadow, making it look like it was in a fight against a monster.
In fantasy novels, the hero always acts mercifully toward his enemies. However, as the novel progresses, it's proven later on that his 'mercy' was a flaw and that he should have chosen to be cruel. Cedric decided to be better safe than sorry.
Vaelion was a vile person, as revealed to Cedric by his system. He had kidnapped, killed, and even raped many victims. Those touched by his evilness and selfishness were too many to count. However, it didn't make Cedric a hero to kill him.
