Chapter 158: I Give My Parents a Rude Awakening

The next morning over coffee, Dad stares at me, a slack-jawed statue.

"Van, if this is some kind of a joke ..."

Mom touches his arm. "It's not a joke. He wouldn't pull that kind of a prank. Neither would Daji. And everything in their story rings true."

"Davina, what the h*ll are you saying?" Dad bursts out. 

"Ashton, think about it."

Dad leaps up, spilling his coffee, the black running in inky streams from his cup. "Think about what? That my parents lost their minds and went off to some old junk shop to buy a cursed object that got them killed? And that no one around here, not one omnipotent god, knew or cared to know what happened to them?"

Daji huffs. "We searched for answers. Not as hard as we could have, but we searched. The dark powers of the Consortium are very effective at cloaking the truth. Even gods sometimes need time to peer through the veil."
