Disheartened To The Very End

After his brother connected him with Alice, he should have suspected that his brother and her had something together. Of course it was too good to be true that Alice agreed to date him just like that.

"You connected me to her, as payment for me helping you to become what you are today. I'm the reason you're a star, the reason you made it this far, and you made me believed–"

Kane was still speaking when Bruce burst into laughter.

"Can you stop whining for a second?" He demanded and beside him, Alice stifled a laugh. When her eyes connected with Kane's shock filled once, she let out a scoff.

"You didn't think I was actually dating you this whole time, did you?" She demanded scornfully and Kane spluttered.

"I literally don't let you into my house, we don't hang out, we don't fuck, we barely kiss, we don't do anything people in relationships are supposed to do. This whole time, I was only doing what Bruce asked me to do. If Bruce hadn't asked me to humor you this whole time, you didn't seriously think I'd willingly be with a loser like yourself, did you?"

Kane's mind was reeling from shock. Everything was happening so fast and he couldn't believe what he was witnessing.

"I'm glad you caught us today because I was genuinely tired of keeping the pretense up." She continued and Kane realized that the relationship he thought he had with her for the past two years, was nothing but a lie.

"Don't be mean, Alice." Bruce admonished but he was laughing as he spoke. Alice rolled her eyes before turning around and walking into the house without looking back.

Kane stared at his brother, feeling his chest tighten with so much pain.

"Go home, Kane." Bruce finally spoke and Kane felt his blood boil with anger.

"That's it? You aren't even gonna apologize?!"

Bruce folded his arms. "Why the hell would I do that?"

"For everything I did for you. I taught you soccer, you were hopeless but I brushed you up, and I…"

Bruce cut him off. "So what? Am I supposed to crawl on my knees for you or something? You keep bringing that up every time but it's not gonna change anything. I'm a star player now and you are… you're a loser, Kane"

"You ungrateful bastard." Kane snarled and Bruce snorted.

"I think you're the bastard here, since father already disowned you." He pointed out.

"Which is your brother's fault! You and your siblings ruined my fucking life." Kane's voice broke as he screamed in anger, and once again, Bruce was back to massaging his forehead.

"Go home, Kane. Quit whining and go home."

Kane gulped another mouthful of the whiskey he has been nursing since he arrived home hours ago.

He was slumped on the couch and his favorite sports channel was showing a game which took place weeks ago.

Even in his drunk state, Kane was still focused on the screen. He felt his leg start to move as he watched the star player running across the field with his arms spread out while the crowd roared enthusiastically. He soon began to tap his fingers against his knee.

This happens whenever he is focused on a game. It doesn't matter that he has watched football his entire life, whether he sees any player getting into the stance to kick the ball, he always feels an excited pang of anticipation in his chest.

The only time football made him sad, gloomy and depressed was whenever he was watching a game whereby one of the teams playing was the one his brother was on. Because of his brother's presence on the country's national team, he stopped watching the country's games altogether.

The player on screen completely missed his shot and Kane felt a frustrated huff build within him. If the dumb player had steadied his arms and put in enough strength behind the kick at the last moment, he'd have easily helped his team secure the game.

Kane picked the remote up and switched the television off, and he remained in the dark, still in the same position while his mind traveled to the betrayal he experienced tonight.

He no longer has a girlfriend, but tonight revealed that he never had one.

He was really a fool.

At age twenty eight, he had absolutely nothing. He couldn't even visit the club because they wouldn't let him in since he was a known criminal. No one wanted to be his friend because of that as well.

Kane hated his life so much.

That night, for the first time in years, he broke down and muffled his tears in his pillow.

The next morning, he was woken up by police and they arrested him on murder charges.

He was beyond confused. All the proof pointed at him, the fingerprints were his, the clothes picked up by the CCTV were sitting in his sitting room, and Kane was completely lost.

He tried explaining himself but wasn't given a listening ear.

He called his siblings but none showed up.

He knew he was completely doomed when he wasn't allowed to get a lawyer.

His father refused to come to his aid as well.

Kane was all alone, locked up for a crime he didn't commit.

On the hearing day, his siblings of all people were the ones who testified against him.

They all claimed he was always unstable and a lost cause. Even their mother testified against him as well, and in no time, Kane was sentenced to fifteen years in prison.

In the twinkle of an eye, his life went from hot oil to open fire.

In prison, he zoned out every now and then, mind filled with anger, regret and the desperate need to reach his siblings a lesson.

But he knew life wasn't a fairytale, and he knew he knew there was nothing like second chances. He was currently suffering for the dumb decisions he made, and all his regrets wouldn't change a thing.

The days bleed into weeks and Kane became a walking corpse in no time.

One evening, he was in the carpentry arena, sharpening some wood with a bunch of inmates, and that was when one of the largely built guys held the saw against Kane's throat.

Kane, who literally had no zeal in him to fight, only asked him who asked him to do this.

The man snickered, but was still merciful enough to give him the names of the people who paid him to do this.

Bruce, Micheal and Isis– his half siblings.

That was the last thing he held in his mind, and alongside it, a deep pang of regret, right before he got killed.

There was a searing pain, and then there was darkness, pulling him underneath.
