Where am I?
Kane thought within himself as he tried to figure out what was going on, but all he could see was pitch darkness.
He blinked a couple of times, and then he silently wondered if this was the afterworld.
If this was the afterworld, isn't he supposed to be in hell or something? Where is the fire?
Before Kane could keep drowning in his thoughts, he felt the air get sucked out of him in a single go by a gaping hole in his chest, knocking him out straight up.
~~~
When he regained consciousness next, the scratchy sound of iron dragging against the ground echoed through his mind, along with trembling cries. It was a woman's voice and it strained breathlessly on each gasp, cracking around the edges.
Kane was confused, he didn't understand what was happening.
He couldn't see anything and even though he kept trying to blink his eyes open, it felt like his eyes were glued closed by something.
He felt cocooned in a pulsating warmth, and he didn't know where that was emitting from. He briefly wondered wondered if he was hell and a woman was being fucked there by one of the demons.
After a heartbeat, one more loud cry pierced through the room, right before a sharp gust of wind hit him square in the face, engulfing every inch of him and unnerving him immensely.
"What the fuck is happening?!" He cried out, but to his utmost shock, what left his mouth were the cries of a baby.
What the fuck…?
"Ah, he sounds so strong and agile, he's kicking well too. A strong, bouncing baby boy!" A matured voice cooed, rendering Kane more confused.
When he tried opening his eyes this time, it successfully opened and bright lights filled his eyes. He quickly glanced around, noticing that the walls of the room were painted with a warm, light brown color, blending with the white of the roof and the sterile vibe of the entire place.
"He has his mother's eyes!" The voice continued and Kane finally focused on her. She appeared middle aged and had a protective cap over her head. Her hands were gloved and she had on a warm smile as she stared down at Kane.
Kane was lost and perplexed. He didn't understand what was happening, or who this woman was. He didn't understand why he was being referred to as a baby, or why all that was exiting his mouth were the cries of a newborn each time he attempted to speak.
And finally, he didn't understand why he wasn't dead. He remembered being killed, and he remembered that his three half siblings were the ones behind that, after they all testified against him in count.
Anger filled his heart at once. He was still yet to wrap his head around the fact that they had really ordered for him to be killed.
"She's still bleeding!" A voice called out, and Kane noticed the middle aged woman frown.
The woman gently laid him down before rushing towards the woman who he assumed was the one bleeding. As ruckus went down in the background, Kane poundered on confusing his situation.
"L- let me hold my baby." A weak voice whispered after a while. There were a few protests in the room, but after some minutes, the room spinned around Kane as he got lifted by the Middle aged woman once again. This time, a gloomy expression was plastered across her face.
In the next moment, Kane felt himself get laid across a chest, and weak arms wrapped around him. At this point, he has figured out that he was currently in a newborn's body, but how he got here was what was lost on him.
"My lovely baby." The soft voice whispered weakly and even though his head felt ridiculously heavy, Kane looked sideways and his eyes locked with a woman's.
He instantly recognized her, and it was like he got dunked underneath cold water. This was his mother staring at him right now, with weak, tear filled eyes and a tired smile.
Kane never got to meet his mother since he was born, but he got shown a bunch of pictures of her, so he knew what she looked like.
Why is he a newborn being cradled by his mother right now? Does this mean he was reborn into the same life he just exited?
A bunch of questions ran through his head as his mother stroked his hair, whispering soft words of love to him. So many emotions filled Kane's chest, he never got to experience anything like this in his old life.
He wished he could say something to his mother, to ask her if she's okay, but he couldn't do anything but cry each time he tried to speak.
How inconvenient.
"His name should be Kane. He's- he's the best thing that has ever happened to me." The woman's voice slurred as she spoke. Nurses standing around the bed all had heartbroken expressions on, and when Kane glanced at his mother again, he watched as her eyes fluttered close, just as her hold around him loosened.
Kane's eyes widened and he instantly understood what just happened.
His mother had just died.
In his old life, he never knew his mother spent her last minutes on earth giving him all her love. To think Kane grew up hating his mother and blaming her for bringing him into this world.
He instantly felt like the biggest asshole ever, and the guilt sat heavily in his chest.
In this new life, Kane realized that he didn't understand a lot of things in his past life. So many things which made no sense to him back then, now seemed extremely reasonable right now.
Kane remained in the hospital for three days till his mother's elder brother arrived at the hospital and picked him up.
Norbit Mendes.
Kane wasn't fond of Norbit in his old life. To be clear, he actually hated him.
The man maltreated him and always poured his anger on him throughout his childhood, which was why he grew up feeling sad for himself and angry at the world.
He tried refusing to go with Norbit, but all that left his mouth was shrill cries as Norbit carried him away from the hospital.
That same day, Kane realized that his mother actually hid the fact that she was pregnant from Norbit, her only brother. It wasn't until Norbit stumbled on a letter when he went to ransack her small apartment that he realized who Kane's father was.
Norbit recently got married and his wife also just had a baby boy named Mal. That night, Kane was placed in the same room as Mal, and it was while listening in on the conversation between Norbit and his wife that he realized that Norbit was already trying to reach out to his father, in order to let him know of his child.
However, a few days later, Norbit gets a visit from a stoic man warning him to keep Kane's father a secret from the world and to never dare reach out to Kane's father if he still wanted to be alive.
After that, Norbit fully took Kane in and began to bring him up along with his own child, Mal.
