Laura's uncle, Mr. White, sat at the kitchen table, his eyes fixed on the floor. He couldn't bear to look at Laura, knowing he had contributed to her family's downfall. His own debts had spiraled out of control, and now his brother's family was paying the price.
Mrs. White, his wife, had taken charge, selling Laura's parents' belongings to pay off their debts. But Mr. White knew it wasn't enough. They needed a more permanent solution, one that would secure their future.
Laura watched her uncle, sensing his shame and guilt. She knew he wasn't a bad person, but his weaknesses had led them to this point. She felt a pang of sympathy for him, but it was quickly replaced by anger. Why had he let things get so bad?
Mr. White's eyes finally met Laura's, and he knew he had to act. He couldn't let his niece suffer because of his mistakes. But what could he do? The debt collectors were closing in, and they had nowhere to turn.
Mr. and Mrs. White's three children, Bella, Mella, and Fella, sat at the table, their faces reflecting their unpleasant nature. Bella, the eldest, had a perpetual scowl, while Mella's eyes seemed to bore into Laura's soul. Fella, the youngest, looked like he'd rather be anywhere else.
Mella's gaze kept drifting to Laura, her expression twisted in disdain. Laura sensed that Mella resented her, but she didn't know why. Maybe it was because Laura's presence reminded Mella of her own inadequacies.
Fella, on the other hand, seemed disinterested in the whole scene. He played with his food, his eyes fixed on some invisible point on the wall. Laura wondered if he was as cruel as his sisters or just disconnected from the world.
They all hated Laura because of her beauty and her overly kindness behavior. She was as beautiful as a fairy but she was also very timid.
After Laura parents passed on...she has been staying with her auntie family for 3 years and it has been really tough because they all hated her apart from Mr white who feels sympathy for her. She just turned 19 few days ago but she wasn't even celebrated.
Mrs. White glared at Laura, her eyes flashing with anger. "You're the reason we're in this mess," she spat. "If you weren't so useless, we wouldn't have to sell you."
Mr. White shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes darting between his wife and niece. He knew his wife's words were unfair, but he couldn't bring himself to defend Laura.
Bella snorted, her voice dripping with malice. "Yeah, Laura's always been a burden."
Mella nodded in agreement, her eyes glinting with cruelty. "We're better off without her."
Fella just shrugged, his expression apathetic. "Whatever."
Laura felt a surge of anger at the White children's cruelty, but she bit her tongue. She knew arguing would only make things worse.
