Chapter 89: Erase Consciousness And Obtain Kaido Clone

Vegapunk's concerns were valid. What Carlos was proposing was essentially poaching—taking Vegapunk away from the World Government. The Five Elders poured tens of billions of beli into Vegapunk's research every year, so it was unlikely they would agree easily.

But Carlos had a plan. He smiled as he pulled out a special Den Den Mushi used to communicate directly with the Five Elders. After a moment, Saint Saturn's deep voice came through.

"Carlos, what's the situation?"

"I'm with Vegapunk. Unfortunately, I have some bad news."

There was a brief pause on the other end, followed by an impatient tone. "Stop stalling. What happened?"

"Just now, Monkey D. Dragon attacked Egghead Island."

"What?!" Saint Saturn's voice exploded with shock and anger. "Isn't the Revolutionary Army already launching rebellions all over? Why would Dragon go to Egghead? What does he want with Vegapunk? Is Vegapunk alright?"

Carlos smiled to himself, ignoring the outburst, and continued calmly. "Don't worry. I was here and managed to fend him off. Vegapunk wasn't seriously harmed. However, to ensure his safety and prevent any further incidents, I plan to bring him to Marine Headquarters."

Saint Saturn's tone softened, clearly relieved. "You fought off Dragon? Impressive, Carlos. Your strength is becoming harder to comprehend…"

He continued, "No matter, you did well this time. Vegapunk is far too valuable to the World Government. We cannot afford any accidents with him."

Carlos glanced at Vegapunk standing beside him. "There is another issue, though. During the battle, most of the lab's equipment and data were destroyed. According to their estimates, it'll take at least one to two years to fully recover."

There was silence from the other side, followed by a deep, frustrated sigh.

"And... Kaido. He managed to escape during the chaos."

Another long pause ensued before Saint Saturn responded, his tone tired but resigned. "Tell Vegapunk that when the next shipment of Heavenly Tribute arrives, I'll allocate him additional research funds. We can manage a one or two-year delay. As long as Vegapunk is safe, have him stay with you for now."

He sighed again. "As for Kaido... well, the Marines should always be prepared to enter the New World."

The call ended, and Carlos looked at Vegapunk with a smirk. "Well?"

Vegapunk laughed and gave a thumbs-up. "You handled that beautifully. Not only did you pin everything on Dragon, but you also bought me two years of freedom!"

Excitement flickered in Vegapunk's eyes. "So, what are we waiting for? Let's go!"

Carlos waved his hand, his expression calm. "Not so fast. There's one more thing we need to deal with first."

Following Vegapunk's lead, the group arrived at a heavily reinforced, specially designed cell. Through the thick Seastone bars, they could see what was happening inside.

"This is the clone of Vegapunk-01, representing Integrity," explained Shaka. "Under the influence of pure Seastone, high-voltage shocks, twenty times gravity, and nerve gas, Kaido has been rendered unconscious."

Vegapunk nodded, though he still seemed uneasy. "It's not hard to separate part of his consciousness, but are you really sure about this? Cutting out 30% of his consciousness and injecting it into a clone?"

Carlos nodded without hesitation. Before coming to Egghead Island, his goal had been to acquire high-tech weapons and equipment, as well as secure the Master Ball. Now that Vegapunk had agreed to work with him, the weapons were no longer an issue.

As for Kaido… keeping him locked away forever wasn't practical. It was better to make him like Lilith, Edison, and the other Vegapunk clones—by cutting off part of Kaido's consciousness and turning him into a subordinate clone.

If the plan succeeded, Carlos would gain a formidable new asset. Kaido's strength was legendary, something Carlos was well aware of. Using Kaido's identity, Carlos could form his own pirate crew and secretly take control of the New World.

On the surface, he would remain the Marine Fleet Admiral. But in secret, he would be the true ruler of the seas. With such power at his disposal, who could oppose him?

By then, the entire Grand Line would be under his control. Neither the Revolutionary Army nor the World Government would be able to stand in his way.

But first, he had to ensure the process of turning Kaido into his clone went smoothly. Once that hurdle was cleared, everything else would fall into place.

He was aware of the risks, but since Vegapunk had agreed to work with him, there was no reason to suspect foul play.

Watching from the side, Ain was ready to act. If anything went wrong, she could use her Return-Return Fruit ability to restore Kaido's state to what it was before the experiment.

Carlos pushed aside the countless thoughts swirling in his mind and spoke in a calm, commanding tone.

"Keep Kaido's battle memories intact but erase everything else."

"Let's begin."

Half an hour later...

The indicator light on the console shifted from red to green. Carlos stood still, a strange sensation washing over him. It was as if he had two bodies—he could clearly feel Kaido's movements in the cell, almost like his own.

Frowning slightly, he glanced at Vegapunk. "Why do I feel... uncomfortable?"

Vegapunk explained, "That's because you and Kaido are now linked through consciousness. In this state, your memories, senses, and experiences can be shared. Essentially, you're controlling two bodies at once."

He continued, "Of course, if you're uncomfortable with it, you can disconnect the link at will—just like I do. When the connection is off, the clone will act based on the residual consciousness you've left in its body."

"For example," Vegapunk pointed to Lilith, "I transferred all the evil aspects of my consciousness into her. That's why she comes off as 'bad' compared to the others."

After listening, Carlos nodded as he processed the explanation. He carefully reviewed his own memories, ensuring there were no issues. Once satisfied, he confirmed the experiment's success.

Vegapunk released the restraints on Kaido, including the Seastone suppression. As soon as it was lifted, Carlos felt Kaido's full presence—every aspect of his being. He couldn't help but marvel at the sensation.

"This really is the world's strongest creature," Carlos muttered in awe. "Such an absurdly powerful body!"

Although their physical strength was almost equal, the overwhelming vitality coursing through Kaido's body left Carlos far behind.

"System, open the panel," Carlos silently commanded in his mind.
