Elanor's steps grew slower as he closed the distance between himself and Raya. His heart pounded in his chest, each beat echoing in his ears like a drum. As he approached, the world seemed to narrow to the space between them, the sounds of the park fading into a distant murmur. All that remained was the sight of her, standing there with her camera in hand, her expression shifting from surprise to uncertainty.
"Raya?" Elanor's voice was tentative, unsure of how she would react to his sudden appearance.
Raya blinked, as if trying to make sense of the moment. She lowered her camera slightly, her gaze locking onto his, searching for something in his eyes. For a few seconds, neither of them spoke, the tension between them thick and palpable.
"Elanor?" she finally said, her voice a mix of confusion and something else he couldn't quite place. "What are you doing here?"
"I... I was just walking through the park," Elanor said, his words stumbling over themselves. He felt an awkwardness settle over him, an old, familiar feeling he hadn't experienced in years. "I didn't expect to see you here."
Raya's friends turned at the sound of her voice, and Elanor suddenly found himself the focus of three pairs of eyes. The woman with curly dark hair straightened up from her crouch, a curious expression on her face, while the man who had been standing beside them looked equally intrigued.
"Who's this, Raya?" the man asked, glancing between Raya and Elanor with a friendly, yet inquisitive smile.
"This is... Elanor," Raya said slowly, her voice distant, as if she were still processing the situation. "We went to college together."
"Elanor?" the woman echoed, her eyes widening with recognition. "Wait, is this the Elanor you've mentioned before?"
Raya hesitated, her gaze flickering between her friends and Elanor. "Yeah, that's him."
The man extended his hand toward Elanor, a welcoming smile on his face. "Hey, I'm Jasper. Nice to meet you, Elanor."
Elanor shook Jasper's hand, feeling a bit of the tension ease. "Nice to meet you too, Jasper."
"And I'm Lena," the woman said, stepping forward to introduce herself. Her smile was warm, but her eyes held a hint of the same curiosity that Jasper's did. "It's great to finally meet you, Elanor. We've heard a lot about you."
"You have?" Elanor asked, his brows knitting together in confusion. He glanced at Raya, who looked suddenly uncomfortable.
"Oh, just bits and pieces," Lena said quickly, waving a hand dismissively. "Raya's mentioned you a few times, that's all. We're just surprised to see you here."
"Yeah, surprised," Raya echoed, her voice strangely flat.
Elanor felt a knot form in his stomach. He had been so focused on finally getting to talk to Raya that he hadn't really thought about how she might feel about seeing him again, especially with her friends there. There was a strange tension in the air, something unspoken that seemed to hover between them.
"Well, this is a nice coincidence, isn't it?" Jasper said, breaking the silence with his easygoing tone. "What are the odds that you'd run into each other here?"
"Yeah," Elanor agreed, though his voice lacked the enthusiasm Jasper's held. "It is."
Lena exchanged a glance with Jasper, then turned back to Raya with a knowing smile. "You know, Raya, maybe you and Elanor should catch up. We can always take more pictures later."
Raya looked like she was about to protest, but Lena gave her a gentle nudge. "We'll be just over there," she said, gesturing to a nearby bench. "Take your time."
With that, Lena and Jasper walked away, leaving Elanor and Raya alone by the water's edge. Elanor watched them go, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension. This was the moment he had been waiting for, the chance to talk to Raya without any interruptions. But now that it was here, he found himself unsure of how to begin.
For a few moments, neither of them spoke. The silence between them was heavy, filled with all the things that had been left unsaid over the years. Elanor could feel the weight of the past pressing down on him, the memories of their time together in college, the connection they had once shared, and the way it had all slowly unraveled.
"Raya," Elanor began, his voice tentative, "I'm sorry if this is awkward. I didn't mean to interrupt your day."
Raya shook her head, though her expression remained guarded. "It's fine, Elanor. I just... I wasn't expecting to see you."
"Yeah, I wasn't expecting to see you either," Elanor admitted, rubbing the back of his neck in a nervous gesture. "It's been a long time."
"It has," Raya agreed, her gaze drifting to the water. "A lot has changed."
Elanor nodded, though he wasn't sure if she was talking about the world around them or the space between them. "Yeah. It has."
For a moment, they lapsed into silence again, the only sound the distant quacking of ducks as they paddled across the lake. Elanor knew he needed to say something, to break through the awkwardness that hung between them, but the words seemed stuck in his throat. How did you reconnect with someone you had drifted so far away from?
Finally, Raya turned to him, her expression unreadable. "Elanor, why didn't you ever stay in touch after college?"
The question hit him like a punch to the gut, and Elanor felt a wave of guilt wash over him. It was a question he had asked himself a thousand times over the years, but hearing it from Raya made it all the more painful.
"I don't know," Elanor said honestly, his voice heavy with regret. "I guess... I was scared. Scared that I wasn't what you wanted, or that I wouldn't be able to give you what you deserved."
Raya's eyes softened, though her expression remained guarded. "Elanor, we were both young, trying to figure things out. But you just... disappeared."
"I know," Elanor said, his voice thick with emotion. "And I'm sorry for that. I shouldn't have let things end the way they did. I shouldn't have just walked away."
Raya looked down at her hands, her fingers twisting the camera strap absentmindedly. "I thought about reaching out so many times," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "But every time I tried, I convinced myself that you had moved on, that you didn't want to hear from me."
"I never moved on, Raya," Elanor said, the words tumbling out before he could stop them. "I thought about you all the time, about what we could have been. But I was too much of a coward to do anything about it."
Raya looked up at him, her eyes searching his face for something—maybe honesty, maybe understanding. "So why now, Elanor? Why did you come here today?"
"I didn't come here looking for you," Elanor admitted. "I was just trying to clear my head, to get away from work for a while. But when I saw you... I knew I couldn't walk away again. I had to talk to you, to try and make things right."
Raya sighed, her shoulders slumping as if the weight of the conversation was finally catching up to her. "Elanor, I don't know if things can ever be right between us again. Too much time has passed, and we've both changed so much."
"I know," Elanor said, his voice filled with resignation. "But I had to try. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't."
Raya didn't respond immediately, her gaze fixed on the water as if searching for answers in the ripples. The sun was beginning to dip lower in the sky, casting a warm golden light over the park. It was a beautiful evening, but the atmosphere between them felt heavy, weighed down by years of unspoken words and unresolved feelings.
Elanor took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "Raya, I know this is a lot to process, and I don't expect you to just... forgive me for everything. But I want you to know that I've never forgotten you. You were always there in the back of my mind, no matter how much I tried to focus on other things."
Raya finally looked at him, her expression softening slightly. "I never forgot you either, Elanor. But it's hard to know where to go from here."
Elanor nodded, understanding her hesitation. "Maybe we don't need to figure it all out right now," he said gently. "Maybe we can just start with today—start with catching up, with talking about where we've been and what we've been doing. We don't have to decide everything at once."
Raya hesitated, her gaze flickering between Elanor and the distant horizon. "I guess... I guess we could try that."
Elanor felt a glimmer of hope at her words. "Yeah? We could grab a coffee or something, just... talk."
Raya nodded slowly, though there was still a hint of uncertainty in her eyes. "Okay, Elanor. We can try that."
Elanor let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. It wasn't a resolution, it wasn't a grand reconciliation, but it was a start. A tentative first step toward rebuilding something that had been lost for too long.
As they stood
there by the water, the sounds of the park slowly returning to the forefront, Elanor felt a sense of relief. The path ahead was uncertain, filled with potential pitfalls and complications, but for the first time in years, he felt like he was moving in the right direction.
And maybe, just maybe, the stars that had once seemed so far out of reach were beginning to align in ways he had never expected.
