Kate's POV
"Is… this Alpha Grimes?" I said faintly into Ellen's ear.
A man of about six feet tall came to stand at my bedside, and had his eyes fixed on me, going over my body as though I was a hard puzzle for him to solve.
Ellen gently pressed my fingers together. It was a sign to approve that he was the person I had thought him to be. Derek and Michell had made him come inside to meet me.
"You can see her current state.... She can barely speak, and up till this time, we haven't been able to get an idea of why she is in this state."
Alpha Grimes grinded his teeth, probably chewing on something that wasn't likely to be a food substance.
"Excuses, excuses, excuses," he said. "She would always get better, and by then she would come with me to my pack as my mate."
Why had they let him into my room? I almost screamed out. It just didn't make sense to me.
Derek and Mitchell seemed to have lost a standing in their own home. His presence was something they couldn't go against, and while he stood in front of me, scanning the room with his eyes, they moved to a corner, close to my bed.
"What had made her this way?" He was coming close to me.
But Derek and Mitchell still didn't know the problem with me.
"It's.... It's a fever.... It has sucked deep into her." Mitchell's sentence was breaking.
"Hmmm.... I should sit down."
Derek immediately asked Ellen to get a chair for him. He sat down, just looking at me. I wished he was going to take his leave, maybe he was going to consider my current state.
"Has she gone through treatments?"
They were quiet, probably thinking of the right answer to give him.
"Any treatment?" He asked again.
"She.... has," Mitchell answered.
"Then what's the problem with her if truly she has gone through treatments?"
"Actually.... We haven't been able to get a physician to come here.... Her sickness was sudden, and the physician is still on his way."
"Oh..."
I was sure that did not make sense to him, but just decided to ignore, instead of pushing into things.
He left his seat, and walked to me, touching my jaws, and his hand going to my neck. I flinched, but he still kept his hands on me. Obviously, it didn't matter to him if I was okay with his touch or not.
"Kate." He called. "Your parents should have told you most things you need to know about me." He smiled creepily, and that sent shivers all over my body.
He was too crazy.
"I want to go with her." He took up a stern expression.
Mitchell and Derek's countenance sank, and I wanted to sit up to make a protest.
"She can't go this way," Derek said. "She can't go like this.... Please understand."
He turned around a spot. "I should understand? I have better physicians in my pack, and it's never a problem to get her treated." And then he rolled his eyes. "Except you want to go against me?"
"No... No...." Mitchell moved to stand in front of me. "She really needs my care.... As I'm her mother.... I have no intention to go against you..."
His gaze at her was piercing, and my faintly opened eyes could only blink as I moved my fingers, signaling for him to come closer so I could speak. It was a hard effort I was about making, but what else could I do?
Ellen tried to make me stay mute, but I was ready, as there was nothing she could do to stop me.
Just then, his eyes fell on my hands.
"You want to tell me something?"
I nodded, and he bent down for his head to be almost the same level with the bed.
"Speak my dear darling, tell me you can't wait for me to have you." He touched my fingers. "Come on, speak."
The smile on his face made me pinch the bedspread with my other hand.
"Give.... me time.... Just time." I paused for a while to take in breaths. "We can.... Discuss this.... Some other time."
His face twitched. Was he actually surprised? But it was just the first time I was that close to him.
"I was expecting you would confess your affection to me."
My reasoning went in circles. He just met me, and he was expecting me to confess my love to him. If I had had moments with him, then maybe what he was saying was close to being reasonable. It only proved he was a crazy fellow.
He left my side, turning to my parents, about to pour his emotions out to them.
"Derek!" He scowled. "You didn't inform her of good things about me. You didn't inform her of the deal we made."
Derek bent his head low, avoiding his gaze. "I was going to do that.... Time hasn't let me."
"You are supposed to be an Alpha I can trust, but now.... You're already failing me."
"Please consider her request." Mitchell came in. "She is not in the right state for anything."
He didn't speak, but stomped out of the room. Derek and Mitchell followed him. Soon, I heard their voices fill the sitting room. It was as though war had started.
"Kate, you really have to make sense of what happened so Derek would know what to do," Ellen said.
"I need.... The physician.... To check on me.... He should also call the scribes to read the circles to me...." I coughed.
Ellen touched my chest. "Your body is heating up!"
She tensed up, and quickly used the towel that was still placed in a bowl to rub all over my neck.
"The physician is close by. You have to wait for just a short time."
The door of the room was opened forcefully, bringing in Alpha Grimes, Derek, and Mitchell.
Things had gone south.
"You made her attend the mating ball? Without considering the deal we had?"
