MILES

My phone buzzed lightly against the table, distracting me from the meeting I was half-listening to. I glanced down at the screen. An unfamiliar number flashed across it. Without much thought, I flipped the phone over, face down, deciding it wasn't worth my time, and refocused on the presentation in front of me.

About an hour later, the door creaked open, but I didn't bother looking up. The room was dim, lit only by the projector's glow, and frankly, I wasn't interested in whoever had just entered. That was until Jay quietly appeared at my side, leaning in close.

"Boss," he whispered, his voice low but urgent. "Just got off the phone with SAS. Ms. Axelle's been arrested."

"Shit." The word escaped me in a hushed mutter as I grabbed my phone, noting the seven missed calls from the same number I'd ignored earlier.
