RENEE
I had a press release scheduled with Miles today, so I decided to stop by his office first so we could head there together. Things weren't looking great at my company—far from it. The board was breathing down my neck, demanding that I take control of the rumors before they spiraled any further. If I didn't handle it fast enough, they'd bring in Malcolm to do the job instead. That couldn't happen.
With both hands buried deep in my pockets and my head slightly lowered, I leaned against the back of the elevator, waiting for it to reach the top floor. The hum of the machinery filled the small space, blending with the faint sound of my steady breathing. I wasn't in the mood to be seen, let alone make small talk with anyone.
Just as the elevator was about to ascend to Miles' floor, it suddenly jerked to a stop on the seventh. The doors slid open, and a group of employees stepped in, chatting amongst themselves.
