I turned around, still holding a decorative pillow, and met Liam's gaze. His voice carried a sharp edge, but I didn't flinch. My security detail wasn't far. I could feel their presence, their watchful eyes locked on Liam, ready to step in at the slightest sign of trouble. They blended into the environment well.

"It was either you or me," I said, my tone cool and unbothered. "So I chose me." I didn't offer an apology. I wasn't sorry. "You had every chance to issue a statement of your own, to set the record straight. But you didn't."

Liam exhaled through his nose, the kind of exhale that wasn't quite a sigh. He folded his arms across his chest and took a measured step back. "Tell your men to stand down. I'm not here to hurt you."
