Chapter 68: The Truth Revealed
Emily kept her eyes closed, her brows tightly knit, and didn't immediately answer Ethan's question. After a long moment, she finally lowered her hand from her forehead and opened her eyes to look at him. Her almond-shaped eyes were filled with a probing, scrutinizing gaze.
Ethan met her stare, his long eyelashes fluttering slightly. "What... have you remembered?"
Emily didn't reply. She continued to study him for a few more seconds before speaking slowly. "It seems like you really don't want me to remember."
Ethan didn't deny it; his gaze dropped slightly as he spoke in a soft voice. "You've been recovering memories from before our marriage. As for what happened afterward..."
He sighed lightly, deciding to be honest. "You know we had some misunderstandings before. I'm just afraid that if you remember everything, you'll be upset."
Emily raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Just how upset would I be?"
Hearing this, Ethan involuntarily felt a small sense of relief. She probably hadn't remembered everything yet. But the next second, his heart sank as Emily once again pushed the agreement away.
"I'm not signing it," she said, shaking her head.
This time, her refusal was different from the playful one earlier. Ethan could sense that she was serious now.
"I think," Emily continued, "I'll wait until I remember everything before I sign."
Emily had thought she could let go of those three years—after all, the misunderstandings had been cleared up, and he loved her so much now, so why cling to the past? But now she realized that she couldn't just ignore it.
She understood the deep sincerity behind this agreement and didn't doubt Ethan's feelings for her now. It wasn't that she harbored resentment toward him; it was just that the memories of their past kept surfacing in fleeting, fragmented flashes. With this constant uncertainty, it was impossible to move forward.
Moreover, he remembered everything. Only she had forgotten.
This one-sided, opaque dynamic felt... unsettling.
Ethan stared at the agreement on the table for a few seconds before slowly picking it up again.
"Alright, I respect your decision."
His voice was firm. "But I'll keep this agreement on hand until the day you recover your memories and are willing to sign it."
Emily blinked at him, her eyes curious. "Why don't you just tell me? Tell me what happened after we got married."
Ethan instinctively recoiled at the idea.
He remembered everything, but that didn't mean he wanted to relive it.
He didn't want her to remember, but revisiting those memories was just as painful for him. The misunderstandings and the hurt he had caused her had all come back to haunt him, a slow and relentless torment that made him feel like no matter how much he gave now, no matter how deeply he loved her, it would never be enough to atone for his past mistakes.
Emily's memory was clearly returning faster now, and the doctor had said that with selective amnesia like hers, full recovery was highly likely.
It seemed it wouldn't be long before she remembered everything...
"Emily," he said, grasping one of her hands on the table. "When you do remember everything, will you still be angry with me?"
"I can't say for sure." Emily tilted her head slightly, pouting. "If you were as much of an Ethan as you used to be, I might still be mad."
Ethan: "..."
He gripped her hand tighter. "Alright. You can be mad at me, yell at me, hit me, bite me—"
His whole upper body leaned closer to her. "Just don't divorce me again, okay?"
His dark eyes were filled with unmasked anxiety, guilt, and even a hint of vulnerability. It was a stark contrast to the confident, authoritative man who had stood up to the entire family earlier.
Emily struggled to suppress a smile.
"We'll see. If I get really mad, I might never sign that agreement."
Ethan's face fell immediately. He leaned forward and hugged her tightly. "No."
His hold on her tightened, his voice low and hoarse. "If you leave me again, I'll die."
Emily: "..."
Ethan's arms encircled her even more tightly, pulling her firmly against his strong chest.
"If you don't want me anymore, I really will die."
Emily: "..."
What was he doing?
This was beyond breaking character.
Chairman Harrison, why are you so good at acting cute?
She almost felt inadequate in comparison :)
Whether it was his overly mushy words or the fact that he was holding her so tightly, Emily felt overwhelmed by his suffocating love, to the point where she could hardly breathe.
She raised a hand and patted his back. "Let go."
Ethan obediently loosened his embrace, and Emily immediately felt something cool on her finger. She looked down to see him sliding a ring onto her left ring finger.
After he finished, as if afraid she might take it off, he quickly grabbed her other hand and held it tightly.
Emily stared at the wedding ring on her finger—one she hadn't seen in a long time—then glanced at the matching ring on his hand. Somehow, it felt... harmonious.
Ethan leaned down to kiss her lips, then pulled her back into his arms. "Now that you're wearing this, you can't escape."
"Emily, even if you remember everything, even if you still don't want me, I won't let you leave."
Emily: "..."
Who was this multifaceted husband?
How could he switch so seamlessly from being cute to being domineering in a matter of seconds?
Ethan pressed a kiss to her hair. "You're mine."
**
Perhaps driven by the fear that his "wife might abandon him again," Emily noticed that Ethan had been more clingy than usual these past few days.
The most obvious sign was how often he called her "baby" during the day—and at night :)
On top of that, he had taken an unusual break for the Lunar New Year and personally piloted a plane for several hours, flying them to a private island he had purchased for a vacation.
This time, Emily brought her camera. Not only did she capture breathtaking aerial shots that could only be taken from a plane, but she also took several pictures of her personal pilot.
The pilot was very pleased and immediately changed both his WeChat and Weibo profile pictures.
There was a hint of smugness in the way he did it, as if he were declaring ownership.
Since he had personally gone online to face off against his rival CP fans, Ethan's Weibo had been quiet for a while. But when he changed his profile picture, it quickly caught people's attention.
[! My grandma finally saw an update from someone she follows. If you can change your profile picture, you can post something too!]
[Happy New Year, dear Dad! [Super Loud Voice] Are you not planning to send out a red envelope? Your store coupons aren't enough to buy New Year's goods! (Heavy hinting)]
[I love this profile picture! It perfectly showcases your looks!]
[Why did you suddenly change your profile picture?]
Ethan only responded to the comment asking why he had changed it:
[My wife took it.]
And with that, everyone got a mouthful of dog food for the Lunar New Year.
[Okay, we get it, you have a wife.]
[Okay, we get it, you have a wife [Goodbye].]
[Okay, we get it, you have a wife again.]
[Alright, we all know your wife is great at photography [Dog Head].]
[Is this a trend now, tricking dogs in and then slaying them [Sour]?]
…
The "Find My Wife" CP fans, who had been quiet for a while, went wild, celebrating as if it were New Year's all over again.
Although everyone firmly believed that the "Find My Wife" mission had been accomplished long ago, this public acknowledgment from the man himself, along with a bit of sweetness, was the ultimate happy ending.
Fans couldn't help but cheer "kswl" while continuing to enthusiastically ship the couple, even pushing their idol to the top of the trending topics.
Emily was used to making headlines, especially after her identity as the wife of a billionaire was revealed. But this time, her name was quickly overshadowed by a few other trending topics.
All of them were about Ryan.
In the past, the news about Ryan had always revolved around his rumored relationship with Emily or the love triangle involving the billionaire couple. But this time, the news had nothing to do with Emily.
Ryan had collapsed during a live stage recording.
The top idol's on-stage accident immediately caused an uproar among his millions of fans online.
TrueArt Media quickly released a statement explaining that Ryan had merely fainted due to low blood sugar and that he was recovering well under medical care.
Fans, however, weren't convinced.
They had previously protested TrueArt Media's overly packed schedule for Ryan, and now, instead of improving, things had gotten worse, leading to him collapsing from exhaustion. As fans ramped up their efforts to criticize the company, an anonymous post quietly appeared on a gossip forum late at night and quickly became a hot topic:
"Ryan's Fans, Are You Sure You're Protesting the Right Company? The Real Culprit Behind Your Idol's Overwork Isn't TrueArt Media But the Bigger, More Powerful Capital Behind It."
The post detailed the "gambling agreement" signed between TrueArt Media and Creston Media Enterprises, shedding light on the true reason behind Ryan's overwork—capitalist pressures forcing the artist to bet everything, even his health.
At the end of the post, the anonymous writer included Ryan's schedule before and after the gambling agreement, clearly showing how his workload had significantly increased
after the deal, pushing him to the brink.
Fans had already heard rumors about company gambling deals, but seeing the cold, hard data laid out like this sparked a wave of outrage. They flooded social media with messages of support for Ryan, condemning the companies involved and lamenting the ruthless nature of the entertainment industry.
