Midas awoke with a start, leaping out of his bed in a flurry of curses.
"Shit. I'm going to be late for class."
He dashed into the adjacent bathroom to shower. After a few minutes, he returned and looked around the messy room which he owned. Clothes lay strewn about with the black desk riddled with papers still illuminated by the lamp on it.
Finding what he was looking for on the desk, he picked up a band that looked like a bracelet and wore it on his left wrist. It was black with a single blue insignia shaped like the signed used for monitoring vitals engraved in the middle.
Tapping on it twice, the blue insignia lit up, Midas called out to it.
"Sync."
The insignia glowed for a second before dimming once more. A monotonous female voice rung out in the room.
[Syncing….]
[Sync complete.]
[Welcome back (Midas Sullivan)]
Dismissing the page hovering in front of his retina, he combed out his hair as he said.
"Materialize."
Instantly, another page opened before him, displaying a list of virtual clothes. Swiping through them till he found his uniform, tapping on it, the screen disappeared.
His bracelet vibrated and released a gelatinous material that crawled all over his body from the neck down. Resisting a shudder at the coolness of the material, it slowly morphed into Midas' uniform.
He wore black trousers and a blazer embroidered with gold patterns. On the left chest of his blazer, an insignia of a spear with it's tip pointing skyward with swirls of flames was etched beautifully.
Walking out of his room, Midas walked down the dark and gloomy hallway into the living room of the apartment, the gloominess of the room was further accentuated by the few sun rays spilling into the room. Finding a note on the center table, Midas picked it up to read.
After a few seconds of reading, he let out a sigh. Apparently his father had left early to work and he was to make breakfast himself. Frowning, he let out another sigh before walking out of the door and locking it behind him with his bracelet.
He knew the reason his father left so early for work. He was probably trying to earn extra credits to buy an aether core for him. He had told him not to worry repeatedly but his father was a very stubborn man. His son was the first ability user in the family for the past five generations, he wouldn't be able to live it down if Midas didn't pass the test coming up in two days.
Immediately he walked out of the apartment, the view immediately changed. They lived on the sixth floor of the residential building and the flight of steps he would have to take to get down was really monstrous. They had repeatedly told the owner of the building they needed an elevator, but the cheapskate ignored their pleas repeatedly.
As he watched various hover cars fly past with their occupants going to work or school, he felt a pang of jealousy in his heart. Bracing himself, he ran toward the end of the hallway where the stairway was located and jumped out of the side terrace.
Feeling the rush of wind on his face as he fell toward what could only be his imminent death, Midas simply squinted his eyes as he counted the seconds. Immediately he got to eighteen, he called upon the aether in the air and a mysterious energy coursed throughout his body as he quickly outstretched his arm, grabbing onto the terrace of the second floor. What normally would result in him dislocating his arm or even ripping it off was just a feeling of burning pain for Midas.
This was the current age, humans had surpassed their limits and were now capable of superhuman displays of strength.
Letting go the legde, he fell to the ground and a slower pace and landed gracefully on both feet. Dusting off the imaginary dirt on his clothes, he started a sprint toward the west of the district, his destination: Aranis Heroic Academy.
