Lottie still looks unconvinced. In fact, it seems like the more confident Marianne feels about her assessment, the less confident Lottie feels.

"You're really underestimating that man's heartlessness," repeats Lottie. "He is a billionaire. He is naturally cut off from everyone else. Money is power. Power corrupts."

Marianne sighs as the train's public address system announces that they are at Delby. "I don't disagree that the filthy rich tend to be assholes," she says. "But had Raylen been completely irredeemable, Laney would not have been with him for so long."

Lottie swallows. "She might've just been stupid."
