CHAPTER 47: BIRTHDAY BANQUET

Another day dawned, and it was an important day, at least for the Meyer and the other families who were very serious about their networking.

On this day, several cars could be seen arriving and parking in front of the Meyer Hotel in Stardale City, the place where the banquet was going to be held.

People of influence alighted from the cars dressed beautifully and handsomely.

In one of the cars, a young woman wore a gentle expression on her face, making her look like a descendant of a scholarly family.

Sitting next to her was a middle-aged woman with similar features. With a glance, anyone could tell that these two were related in some ways.

When the car arrived, the middle-aged woman turned to look at the young woman seated next to her and said, "Anna, remember what we talked about. You can't mess up this chance. You hear me?" her tone was a bit condescending.

The young woman, Anna, didn't seem fazed by the tone of the other and just looked at the other with a helpless smile saying, "Mother, don't you trust your daughter?"

Anna's mother rolled her eyes at her daughter and said, "I trust you, but don't you think that you have taken a bit too long to hook him up?"

Anna, upon hearing that, wanted to yell at her mother and ask her if she didn't know who the opponent was.

If she hastily made a move, wouldn't she lose even a slight chance of even trying?

However, she didn't say that to her mother but simply coaxed her mother, saying, "Don't worry. I made the plans already. Just wait until he becomes your son-in-law again!" patting her mother affectionately on her hand.

When Anna's mother, Madam Hilary, heard that, a smile blossomed on her face. That's what she wanted to hear.

Seeing her mother pleased and coaxed, Anna inwardly let out a sigh of relief before urging her mother to alight. They had a banquet to attend, after all.

 ***

Inside the hall where the banquet was being held, several people were already in the room interacting with glasses of wine in hand.

The hall was beautifully decorated, and the servers were all meticulously dressed and all over the place, similar conversations could be heard full of flattery.

Amidst the number of guests were the Meyers, who were busy chatting merrily with their close friends and relatives.

It was a special day, so entertaining friends was a must.

Madam Meyer was in the middle of chatting with a friend of hers she had known for years. The two could be considered bosom friends and there was no need to give each other fake smiles. They were too close to such unpleasant acts.

"You look brighter today, friend. Did something wonderful happen to your family?" the friend asked playfully as she sized Madam Meyer from head to toe.

Madam Meyer, who had just been teased, beamed as she thought of the shock that they were going to drop at the guests today. And that didn't go unnoticed by her friend, Madam Antonio. She couldn't help but ask, "What is it, friend? Share with us? Could it be that your youngest will be getting married?" thinking about Alice who was twenty-eight years old but wasn't married.

When Madam Meyer heard that, her face froze for a second, thinking about her daughter's relationship. However, that quickly vanished, and Madam Antonio didn't seem to notice anything.

Nonetheless, she still responded to her friend, not wanting her friend to misunderstand, "No. it's not her. I will celebrate crazily when that happens. It's my son. He has good news to share!" a mysterious twinkle in her eyes as she said so.

Madam Antonio had a high IQ, so her quick-witted brain quickly pierced everything in a short time. She couldn't help but clasp her hand over her mouth, surprise written all over her face.

Madam Meyer, seeing that, couldn't help but nod with satisfaction. As always, her friend knew how to capture the essence of the story quickly.

"You …" while removing her hand from her mouth, Madam Antonio exclaimed as happiness spread across her face. "Is it really true?"

Madam Meyer beamed as she thought of the story though suppressing the pain of the matter, and happily responded to her friend, "It's true."

After getting that confirmation, Madam Antonio's eyes twinkled with mischievousness as she thought of how many hearts would be shattered when that news was announced. She couldn't wait to see that happening.

Knowing what her friend was thinking about, Madam Meyer could only shake her head, finding the other not changed at all, even in old age.

While she was thinking like that, Madam Antonito suddenly exclaimed as she tugged her sleeve, forcing Madam Meyer to jolt out of her thoughts, wondering what juicy gossip she had thought of in such a short moment.

However, when she saw where the other was staring, her eyes couldn't help but narrow.

Why did that person look familiar?

She wondered as she looked at the other.

While she was pondering over that matter, Madam Antonio opened her mouth as she explained the mystery, "Dear, did you see that pretty woman over there in the black dress?"

Madam Meyer nodded. After all, the woman in question not only was familiar, but something about her just made her stand out. Could it be that her confidence was the one that made her look that way?

Just who was she?

Madam Antonio, seeing that her friend spotted the right person, continued explaining the mystery, "She is a famous doctor at the Municipal hospital. She is a surgeon and her rate is 100%. She had never let any life slip through her fingers ever since she started!"

Hearing her friend praising another woman like that, Madam Meyer's interest was piqued. At the same time, she also realized who the other person was.

She briefly saw the other entering the operating room on the day Briar was sent to the hospital. However, she didn't know if the other had participated in the surgery since Briar had a different attending doctor.

To think that the doctor she briefly saw was that good. A wave of appreciation filled her. Doctors were truly godly and people who should be revered all the time. With a wave of their scalpel, they save lives. Of course, death was inescapable, but they always did their best to make sure that the patients they served should live at any cost.

"Her name is Dr. Bertha. She has a PhD from what I heard. You know, I am not a fan of hospitals, but the last time I visited Lady Helen at her house. I saw her there. She is someone her son is interested in. I think that she must have come with him as his date," Madam Antonio continued to share the news.

When Madam Meyer heard that, her eyes narrowed as suspicion filled her. When did Lady Helen become so easy to talk to?

Lady Helen was someone around their age, but she was hot-headed. She was stuck in an unfortunate marriage, and when things went sour, she ruthlessly kicked her husband and raised her children well.

Her youngest son was around Alice's age and she spoiled that son so much. Everyone knows about it and it wasn't easy to please her. There were so many ladies who wanted to marry into the family and yet, with a single word from her, they would cower and not dare think about it again.

It wasn't that the son was useless. He was very accomplished and successful. In a few more years, he would be at Logan's level, but for now, he couldn't compare, but that was another matter.

She was just surprised to hear that this Dr Bertha was seven years older than her son. So how come Lady Helen was encouraging this? Could there be any hidden motives and something that they didn't know?

Unfortunately, before she could ask her friend further, she spotted two familiar faces.
