The Bitter Breakfast

The following morning arrived with a gentle glow of sunlight filtering through the curtains. I awoke to find the events of the previous night still vivid in my mind, like a tantalizing dream I couldn't quite shake. Every glance, every touch between Jake and me replayed in my mind like a tantalizing secret that neither of us could ignore. The quiet of the house was a stark contrast to the lively chaos of the game night, and as I made my way to the kitchen, Caroline was already there, bustling around with her usual morning energy. She was humming softly to herself, lost in the rhythm of her preparations. Her laughter and cheer from last night were still fresh in my memory, and I knew I had to address the delicate situation that had unfolded.

"Good morning!" Caroline greeted me with her usual bright smile. "How did you sleep?"

"Morning," I replied, forcing a casual tone. "I slept well, thanks."

As I grabbed a mug and filled it with coffee, Caroline's curiosity seemed to take hold. "So, last night was quite the game. What did you think of Rummy, Slap, and Spoons?"

I hesitated, trying to act not suspicious. "It was... really exciting. And different."

Caroline's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Different, huh? I'm glad you enjoyed it. What's your favorite among the three?" she paused for a while. "Let me guess, it's Spoons, right?"

The mention of the game brought back the vivid memory of Jake's hand in mine, and I couldn't suppress a slight blush. "It was definitely the most memorable."

Before Caroline could pry further, the sound of a knock on the gate interrupted us. We exchanged curious glances.

"Looks like we have company," Caroline said, her tone light. "I'll go see who it is."

As she walked toward the gate, I could hardly contain my excitement. My heart raced with the rhythmic creak of the gate as Caroline pushed it open. I pressed against the window, desperate to catch a glimpse of what was behind it.

But when the gate finally swung open, my excitement crumbled. There were Caroline and Jake, wrapped up in each other's arms, their faces glowing with a tenderness that cut right through me. Their embrace was intimate and perfect, a tableau of affection that would only happen in my dreams. My anticipation curdled into a bitter disappointment, each beat of my heart echoing the hollow emptiness left in the wake of their shared moment.

I had no choice but to retreat to the kitchen, trying to ignore what I'd just seen. As I waited for them to come in, I was hit with another unwelcoming sight: Jake's arm was wrapped possessively around Caroline's waist, a display of intimacy that felt like a dagger to my chest. I forced myself to focus on my breakfast and not let my disappointment show, though every bite felt like an effort to swallow the bitter reality that had settled in my gut.

Their conversation unfolded right in front of me, leaving me no choice but to overhear every painful word.

"Are you sure you want me to go?" Caroline asked sweetly.

"Yeah," Jake replied. "We might not get another chance like this. I want you to meet my parents."

Caroline's face lit up with a smile, and she leaned in to give him a brief, tender kiss. "Okay," she said, pulling away. "I'd better get ready then." As she started toward the shower, she glanced back and added, "Why don't you chat with Elizabeth while I'm in there? I'll be a while."

With that, she disappeared into the bathroom, leaving me and Jake alone in the kitchen. Her words hit me like a punch. I stared at her until she was out of sight, only to find Jake sitting next to me, staring at me with an intensity that made my heart race. I was completely thrown off. How could he be so involved with Caroline and then act this way?

Jake broke the silence, his voice barely audible. "About last night... it's been on my mind too."

I turned to him, my heart racing, my mouth going dry, and my face flushing. I was too stunned to speak.

He reached out and gently took my hand, sending a rush of warmth through me. "I can't stop thinking about you."

I looked into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and passion there. "But what about Caroline? This is a mess."

Jake's thumb lightly brushed my knuckles. "I know. But…" Before he could say more, the shower door opened. Jake quickly pulled away and acted like nothing happened.

"That was quick," he said, trying to sound casual. "I thought you'd be in there longer."

"Sorry," Caroline replied, emerging from the bathroom. "I didn't want to keep your parents waiting, and I'm excited to meet them." She glanced at us curiously. "What were you two talking about?"

"Just about last night," Jake said coolly.

I couldn't stay in the room any longer. I stood up, muttered something about being still sleepy, and walked out. I headed upstairs, hoping to find someone awake, but everyone was still asleep. Defeated, I crawled back into bed, trying to forget the tangled emotions I couldn't escape.
