The Father in Law

"Son, Daughter."

He spoke to both of them in turn, just one word spared for each.

The word 'daughter' hung in the air like it was some kind of foreign concept, and the room grew cold as Conor spoke, directing the word towards Rache.

It was not truly an inaccurate word to use, and yet it sounded wrong to her ears.

Donncahd stiffened beside her - and that wasn't a reaction she missed. Her stomach dropped in anticipation, though of what she didn't know. She didn't need to know.

If Donncahd reacted visibly to something like that, especially such a brief word, she should also be nervous.

This was the first time the king had spoken directly to her since she'd entered the room - or , possibly even at all. If he'd spoken to her previously at their prior dinner she simply didn't remember it.

But suddenly having his focus on her when it had never really been before wasn't the only reason that her stomach twisted uneasy.

After all.
