Side chapter: New year

The day was slipping away into twilight, the faint glow of the setting sun casting warm hues over the snow-covered landscape surrounding Thalindra's house.

I stood by the window, staring out as the sky darkened, a mix of anticipation and nervous energy fluttering in my chest.

It was New Year's Eve.

The realization felt strange comforting and foreign all at once. In my old life, this night would have been spent with the guild, surrounded by laughter, camaraderie, and the ever-present hum of magic.

But now, standing in Thalindra's kitchen, the faint scent of roasted chestnuts and something cinnamon-y wafting through the air, the atmosphere was far from what I'd grown up with. It was quieter. Stranger.

Yet, somehow, it was perfect.
