Chapter 191: All Are Moles
Wu Heng glanced at the files and closed both folders directly.
He smiled and said, "Welcome aboard. Whatever your status was before, from now on, we are teammates, and we should look out for each other."
"Yes, Captain," the two immediately nodded.
"Wait a bit longer, one more member hasn't arrived."
The two sat down and quietly waited.
The swordsman remained silent, while the rogue initiated small talk with Duke.
Duke, though tall and burly, wasn't much older, and since the rogue started talking, they soon got into a conversation.
Duke acted like a seasoned squad veteran, answering various questions.
Soon after, Marta pushed the door open and walked in.
After Wu Heng introduced the new members to Marta...
He stood up and led the group outside.
"Because of the Warhammer Party, the steward assigned our squad patrol duties, twice a day, in the northern outer district," Wu Heng said quietly as he walked in front.
"Isn't patrolling the gangs' job?" Duke asked.
"It's a critical time now. The Iron Guard Knights are short on manpower, so we have to help with the patrols too," Wu Heng said as they walked.
"Oh, got it, Captain."
The group left the inner district and patrolled around the outer district.
The atmosphere in the city was tense.
Gang members were everywhere.
Some grain and herbal stores already had long lines forming, as people were rushing to buy supplies.
Although this was the border between two races...
There were still many residents.
The Warhammer Party had a notorious reputation, and after killing so many people in the outer district, it was bound to cause panic that they might attack the city.
The squad patrolled the roads from start to finish.
They didn't notice anything unusual.
There were people everywhere, as if the entire city had come outside.
After the patrol, Wu Heng didn't want to linger.
"Alright, that's it for today's patrol. We'll meet at the Guild tomorrow at noon and do another round."
"Okay, Captain."
The group nodded and split up near the inner district.
Wu Heng headed toward the Snake Emblem Consortium.
The others went their separate ways.
...…
Snake Emblem Consortium.
Wu Heng sat in the reception room.
Lecia, resting her chin on her hand, sat beside him and said with some annoyance, "You've been treating this place like a tavern, haven't you? Coming by when you're bored."
"That's not what you said last time," Wu Heng sipped his tea.
Lecia shot him a glance, "You heard about what happened last night, right?"
"The Warhammer Party? I heard a lot of people died," Wu Heng replied.
Lecia picked up a piece of sliced fruit with her fingers and, while chewing, said, "It's worse than the rumors. Not a single caravan heading out survived, and the gangs guarding the outer district were wiped out."
"They wiped out the gangs?"
Wu Heng hadn't heard that part.
But since it came from Lecia, it was likely accurate.
It seemed the Warhammer Party was truly insane.
"Yes." Lecia glanced at him and continued, "Next, the Warhammer Party will definitely cut off the trade routes again, and it'll last longer this time."
"Your consortium shouldn't be too afraid of this, right?"
"It's not about fear, but if the city descends into chaos, it won't be good for anyone," Lecia said.
Wu Heng agreed with this.
Even the merchants hoarding resources didn't want to see the city thrown into chaos.
It wouldn't benefit anyone.
"Yeah," Wu Heng nodded and said, "I have some gold, and I'd like to exchange it here."
With that, he flipped his palm, revealing several shiny gold bars, placing them on the table.
Two 50-gram bars, and ten 10-gram bars.
Lecia's eyes widened slightly.
Once again, these were high-purity, well-crafted gold bars.
"Do you want to exchange all of them for silver coins?"
Wu Heng nodded, "Didn't you say you were falling short of your target this year? Exchange them all, and count it toward your performance."
Lecia instantly broke into a bright smile, "You're so considerate."
She stood up, went to the door, and called in two staff members.
They inspected the gold and then began preparing the silver coins.
Preparing the silver coins took some time.
Bags of coins were brought in, covering the room's floor.
Wu Heng stored them and pulled out a gift box from his space ring, pushing it across the table toward her, "This is for you. I hope you like it."
Lecia raised an eyebrow and narrowed her eyes slightly, giving him a look that said, "I knew you were up to something," and said, "You know I have expensive tastes."
She opened the gift box, and the next moment, her smile turned to surprise.
Inside was a gold necklace encrusted with sparkling diamonds.
The ornate gift box only made the necklace appear even more valuable.
Lecia's eyes widened in astonishment, but she quickly recovered.
Smiling, she said, "I'll accept the gift. If anything happens in the city, feel free to come to the consortium. Like I said, getting you out of here won't be a problem."
"It's not about that. I just thought it would suit you," Wu Heng smiled.
"Yeah, right."
After sitting in the reception room for a while, Wu Heng stood up to say goodbye to Lecia.
He left the consortium and was on his way home.
The two phantoms he had sent out earlier returned, flying into his body.
Wu Heng sat on a wooden bench by the side of the road and began reviewing the images they brought back.
...…
Glenda had been tracking the newly joined rogue, Burke.
After the squad disbanded, the rogue cautiously circled the outer district twice before carefully entering a tavern.
He went up to the third floor and entered a room.
In the dimly lit private room, a few well-dressed individuals were seated.
"Greetings, sirs," the rogue bowed slightly.
The man at the head of the group wiped the corner of his mouth with a napkin and said softly, "You've joined the squad?"
"Yes, and they don't suspect anything."
"Good. Do you have any intel?" the man asked.
"We just did a simple patrol today and didn't find anything specific. The captain doesn't talk much. I plan to gather useful information through one of the orc members." The rogue continued.
The group quietly discussed for a moment before the lead man said, "Alright, joining the squad is enough for today. Keep gathering the intel I asked for. You'll be well compensated."
"Understood," the rogue nodded respectfully and carefully left the room.
He exited the tavern.
...…
Xiaoxiao's perspective.
The newly joined swordsman, Gaul Bory, didn't bother taking a roundabout route.
After the squad disbanded, he headed straight back to the Guild.
He went to the steward's study.
When he entered, Gomez didn't seem surprised at all.
Casually, Gomez asked, "Did Wu Heng say anything to you?"
"No, he just took me on a patrol around the outer district," the swordsman replied.
"Hmm, stay in Squad 12 and report anything immediately. I have a feeling he's connected to these recent incidents." Gomez paused, then added, "Do your job well. Later, I'll transfer you back to Squad 3, or if you earn enough merits, I'll promote you to captain."
"Thank you, Steward."
"Alright, be careful. He's sharp; don't let him catch on."
"Understood."
...…
Wu Heng sat by the roadside.
He couldn't help but curse under his breath.
The two new members...
They're both moles!
