Chapter 347, How Do You Explain This?

Chapter 347, How Do You Explain This?

The leader had black hair, followed by two individuals—one wielding a long-handled warhammer, the other two swords?

Hearing this answer, everyone present was stunned.

Then, they all turned their heads simultaneously.

They looked at Wu Heng, who was standing to the side, along with the two followers behind him.

One was tall and held a warhammer; the other was human-sized, holding two swords.

Exactly the same!

Was the case… solved?

Did the corpse just give them the answer?

Wu Heng was also startled, looking again at the corpse's appearance.

He truly had never seen this person before, let alone killed him.

As everyone's eyes turned towards him, Wu Heng gave no reaction, simply standing in place.

Imiro also glanced at Wu Heng before turning back to the corpse to ask the third question.

"Do you recall anyone with these features?"

The corpse was silent for a moment, "No."

Imiro continued, "What did they do before they killed you?"

The corpse answered, "They stood by the window and said that as long as I died, it would bring them the greatest benefit."

Last question.

Imiro thought for a while, then asked, "Who do you think would profit the most from killing you?"

"One of my sons, or a few of my subordinates."

After answering the five questions, the corpse lay back on the metal bed.

Silence remained in the room.

Many eyes still occasionally glanced at Wu Heng.

Corpses differed from the living—people could lie, but a corpse only said what it knew.

Among the five questions, the most pointed clues still led to the guild's Deputy Steward.

Imiro looked back at Wu Heng and said, "There is another female corpse, let's question her as well."

Wu Heng said nothing more, activating [Speak with the Dead] again. The female corpse sat up on the metal bed.

The white cloth covering it fell, revealing the corpse clad in a linen shirt.

It must have been put on after the autopsy.

Wu Heng stepped back, and Imiro immediately asked, "Do you recognize who killed you?"

"No."

"What features did the people who killed you have?"

The female corpse responded, "It was dark at the time. All I know is there were three of them—two were average height, the other was tall, and a man spoke."

Human observational abilities were linked to their level and attributes.

The woman obviously wasn't high-level, and given the dim conditions, she couldn't provide much detail.

Imiro nodded, stepped aside, and pointed directly at Wu Heng, "Was it these three?"

The corpse turned its head and looked, "They look very similar!"

Imiro looked at Wu Heng, "Say something!"

Wu Heng looked directly at the corpse and asked, "Was it my voice?"

The corpse hesitated briefly before answering, "Not very similar."

One last question remained.

Imiro asked again, "Who do you suspect the most?"

"My husband, or someone from the Jeremayne family."

The five questions ended, and the corpse lay back down.

...

After examining both corpses.

Those present began speculating among themselves.

In the past couple of days, word had spread within the guild that Wu Heng, a necromancer, hadn't conducted any necromantic experiments.

No one expected a case to be connected to him so soon.

Especially during the time of the "Inspector Envoy's" examination.

It seemed this might be troublesome.

The coroner covered the corpses again.

Imiro said, "Do not disclose this matter for now. Shila Gray, you're in charge of following up with the Stag Merchant Guild and conducting further investigations."

"Understood!" Shila Gray nodded, her eyes sweeping briefly over Wu Heng, who stood in silence.

Imiro looked at everyone else, "That's all for now, everyone go back to your tasks."

The crowd nodded and began walking out together.

Wu Heng didn't follow them outside. He said, "Steward, I want to see the autopsy report."

"Alright, come to my office after you've reviewed it."

"Okay!"

Everyone else left.

Wu Heng took the coroner's autopsy notes and began reading them.

The male corpse had a dagger through the wrist; from the force and depth, it appeared to have been thrown. The fatal wound was on the neck.

The female corpse had also been killed by a dagger to the throat, again appearing to be thrown.

Among the three attackers, one was skilled at throwing knives.

"Where were the bodies found?" Wu Heng asked.

The coroner answered, "At the tavern hotel on Lighthouse Street."

"Were there any other findings at the scene?"

The coroner thought for a moment, "The second squad conducted the scene inspection. You can check their detailed notes, but I heard that other members of the caravan said these two were really loud last night—no one knows how they ended up dead."

From the coroner's expression, Wu Heng guessed what "really loud" meant.

He handed the notebook back, "Thanks!"

He left the morgue directly.

Heading towards the Steward's office.

...

Walking through the corridor, Wu Heng analyzed the events that had just occurred.

"Someone deliberately led the clues towards me—even during the questioning of the dead."

The entire situation wasn't hard to figure out.

Someone had disguised themselves as him and his skeletal attendants, killed these people, and made sure the victims saw their disguises before they died.

Then, during the guild's questioning, they tried to steer the clues towards him.

"Why do this? To kill and disrupt the investigation? Or to frame me deliberately?"

Wu Heng slowed his steps, deep in thought.

The inspector might use that truth-telling artifact on him again, but that was fine—he hadn't killed them.

They might also try to investigate him further.

"At worst, I quit. It wouldn't really affect me."

Unlike before, with his current strength and wealth, he had no real need for the position of Deputy Steward.

He could just go back to being the lord of Rentam City.

Over there, his level 14 strength was already considered top-tier, so he wouldn't fear anyone coming after him.

But still, this kind of setup didn't sit well with him.

It felt like some conspiracy was brewing.

If he continued as Deputy Steward, the guild would still serve as his backing.

Wherever he went, he would still have a certain status.

...

He reached the Steward's office.

He knocked lightly and walked in.

The people inside were the same as during the earlier examination.

Steward Imiro, Assistant Moya, Inspector Envoy Kalaima, and two investigators.

Seeing Wu Heng enter, Steward Imiro immediately said, "What do you think about the answers from the corpses?"

Wu Heng replied, "I don't know the murderers' motives, but it's obviously a setup to frame me."

"Tell me your thoughts," Imiro said.

"The evidence clearly points to me, but that's the biggest flaw," Wu Heng paused, then continued, "As a necromancer, I understand corpses better than anyone. If I wanted to kill them, they wouldn't have a chance to speak twice."
