Chapter 348, Time for Me to Save You
If he had actually done this, then the person would have simply disappeared and wouldn't have ended up in the guild's morgue with a second chance to name him.
The investigators and Assistant Moya began jotting down notes on their papers.
Imiro asked again, "Who do you think might do such a thing?"
"It could be pirates, or maybe the accomplices of that wanted criminal I killed earlier. Right now, I have no specific clues," Wu Heng replied.
On the way here, he had been thinking about it.
He had a bounty put on him by pirates, and the Secret Cult—the group with the accomplice of the wanted man he'd killed—was also a possibility.
Anyone working in the guild was bound to have a few enemies.
Imiro glanced at the documents in his hand, then asked, "Where were you last night?"
"At home."
"Do you have anyone who can vouch for you?"
Last night, he had returned from the zombie world rather late; Minnie and Andviel were already asleep, and he had been chatting on the rooftop with Shanaila.
However, he couldn't reveal anything about Shanaila.
Considering Shanaila's identity, meeting her late at night would be far more scandalous than killing some merchant fleet manager.
"My two maids can vouch for me."
"Family and maids are less credible as witnesses. Anyone else?"
"No one," Wu Heng answered.
The back-and-forth between them continued while the investigators took notes.
After a while, Imiro looked at the Inspector Envoy and said, "It seems like this was a deliberate frame-up."
Imiro trusted Wu Heng quite a bit.
It wasn't that he believed Wu Heng incapable of killing a merchant, but that he trusted Wu Heng wouldn't be foolish enough to leave a body for the guild to find and then use necromancy to point the finger at himself.
Inspector Kalema nodded. "The person capable of arranging something like this must be someone familiar with Deputy Steward Wu Heng."
Imiro nodded in agreement.
Kalema continued, "But the evidence points directly to you, and since I'm inspecting Gold-Silver Island, I can't ignore it. You'll need to step down temporarily, go home, and wait until we confirm that you had no involvement before you can resume your duties. What do you think, Imiro?"
Imiro crossed his hands on the table, thought for a moment, then said, "Wu Heng, any objections?"
"No objections."
"Then take a few days off and wait for Shila Gray's investigation results."
"Alright, I'll head back now."
Imiro nodded, and Wu Heng left the office.
...
Walking through the corridor, Wu Heng saw Shila Gray leaning against the wall, arms crossed.
"What did they say?" Shila Gray asked.
"Suspended pending investigation, waiting for your findings," Wu Heng said.
Shila Gray looked straight at him. "It wasn't you, right?"
"Of course not. Have you ever seen me use throwing knives?"
"No, I figured it wasn't you either." Shila Gray brushed her hair aside and said, "Honestly, it just feels like lately, a lot of things haven't been going your way. Taking a break isn't such a bad idea."
"What do you mean?" Wu Heng asked, standing beside her.
Shila Gray hesitated, then said, "I'm not really sure, just a feeling. But don't worry, I'll get to the bottom of this and clear your name."
"I'm counting on you."
"No worries, it's my turn to save you this time," Shila Gray said.
"Alright."
Shila Gray smiled and patted his shoulder. "I'll get back to work, and I'll update you if I find anything."
"Okay."
...
Back in his study.
Andviel was sitting at the desk organizing documents, while the small owl was chasing a bee around the room.
Seeing Wu Heng enter, Andviel smiled, "Master, would you like something to drink?"
"No, pack things up. We're starting our vacation," Wu Heng said bluntly.
Andviel paused, holding the teapot. "Did something happen?"
Wu Heng briefly explained the morning's events.
He also told her they'd be taking some time off until Shila Gray sorted things out.
"How could they do that?" Andviel said angrily.
Wu Heng smiled, "It's alright. Pack up any valuables, and put away any important documents. We'll be resting at home for the next few days."
Andviel was frustrated but could do nothing as an assistant.
She started tidying up their belongings and left with him.
Along the way, other staff greeted them.
By afternoon, news of the suspension would likely be officially announced.
Only then would everyone else know.
...
During lunch.
Wu Heng explained the events of the morning at the dining table.
Apart from Minnie and Andviel, Shanaila was also seated at one side of the table.
After listening to Wu Heng, Minnie fumed, "How can they do that? It's clearly a frame-up! The guild must be blind."
Wu Heng said, "It's fine. A few days of rest could be nice. If it comes down to it, we'll go back to Rentam City."
"It's not that serious," Shanaila interjected. "Deputy Stewards of the guild aren't so easily dismissed. Even if it were you, you could pay a fine, and it would blow over."
Shanaila knew better than anyone whether Wu Heng had anything to do with it.
Last night, they were all over each other; there was no time for him to go kill some merchant guild manager.
Could the manager possibly be more enticing than her?
"Hmm, we're not going anywhere," Wu Heng smiled.
Shanaila blushed and gave him a sidelong glance.
After a bit more small talk, they began eating.
Taking time off wasn't so bad; there were indeed things that needed attention in the zombie world lately.
After lunch.
Just as Wu Heng returned to his study, there was a knock at the door.
He opened it to find Shanaila in an elegant, form-fitting gown. She walked right in and threw herself into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him.
Wu Heng wrapped an arm around her waist, returned her kiss, and kicked the door closed.
They held each other for a long time.
Finally, they slowly parted.
"Feeling better now?" Shanaila, still blushing, asked, her arms draped around his shoulders.
Hearing this, Wu Heng felt a bit touched.
She was worried that he was feeling down and had come to comfort him.
"My heart feels better, but my body feels a bit uncomfortable," Wu Heng said, sitting down and pulling her onto his lap.
Shanaila sat sideways on his legs, one arm resting on his shoulder. "Should I ask someone to pull some strings for you? It shouldn't be too difficult."
Wu Heng looked at her in surprise.
What a heavenly lover—she was even willing to help him pull strings.
"No need. I think a few days off will be nice—more time to spend with you."
"We're all busy. How much time can we really spend together?" Shanaila said, a bit shyly.
Wu Heng shifted her to sit astride him, leaning against his shoulder. "Don't worry. I'll be fine."
"Alright. It's just a job. If you're not Deputy Steward, I can take care of you."
"But I haven't reached level 15 yet."
"I'll still take care of you. You can be my manservant..."
"Madam, you're a bit kinky."
Wu Heng picked her up and set her on the desk.
He leaned down to kiss her again.
Soon, Minnie's voice called from downstairs, "Shanaila, are you done talking? Come play outside!"
Shanaila turned her head, licking her lips before calling out, "Coming!"
"Hurry up!"
"Alright!"
Shanaila turned back to Wu Heng, gently touching his cheek, "Level 15, okay? I'm waiting for you."
"Almost there."
Shanaila hopped off the desk, adjusted her clothing, and walked out the door.
...
Shanaila went downstairs.
Wu Heng picked up the books that had fallen on the floor and put them back on the desk.
He sat down again, thinking over the day's events.
Everything had come so suddenly.
It had caught him off guard.
"Being falsely accused is truly infuriating."
Since his opponent had framed him, they surely had a goal.
"And with this happening during an inspection, they probably wanted me removed. In that sense, their goal has already been achieved."
"If I were the mastermind, what would I do next after my enemy was removed from their position?"
Wu Heng rubbed his forehead.
His removal was likely just the first step—more trouble was probably on its way.
He needed to be extra cautious in the coming days.
"Sigh... My whole life has been like walking on thin ice."
...
As he was musing.
Glenda flew back in from the ceiling, phasing through it.
Hovering in mid-air, she said, "Not long after you left, that Inspector Envoy took his attendants and went to the tavern on Lighthouse Street."
...
