Slipping Away

"Code blue!!!" A nurse cried out.

The nurse had just entered Evelyn's ward and met her on the floor, in a pool of her own blood.

Two nurses and Doctor Paige rushed into the room.

"What happened to her? How did she end up on the floor?" Doctor Paige inquired, worriedly.

"I have no idea. I came in only to find her like that. But her guardian was in the room with her before I left." The first nurse explained to the Doctor.

The nurses lifted Evelyn from the floor and put her on the bed while the Doctor checked her.

"She is losing blood." A nurse pointed out, in a tone of urgency.

"Prepare for blood transfusion immediately and ..." Doctor Paige was instructing the nurses when she stopped abruptly, because of what she saw as she checked Evelyn.

"Good grief! The stitches are getting loosened. She must have really hit her stomach on the floor pretty hard." Doctor Paige observed, then a frown made its way into her face.

"Did I not ask you to tell her not to stress herself at all? She was just operated on, she wasn't supposed to move about, at all." Doctor Paige yelled at the nurse in charge.

"I told her. I told her guardian also." The first nurse maintained. Doctor Paige heaved a sigh and shook her head.

"Let's get her to the operating room immediately. We have to save her." The Doctor informed the nurses and they all sprung into action.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evelyn could hear the stretcher wheeling around, she could felt being moved from, she could hear the doctor barking orders at the nurses, wanting to save her life.
She could hear how the doctor kept asking her to hang on.
"You have to get through this. You have to, for the sake of your baby." Doctor Paige said to her.
Evelyn could hear everything but couldn't reply. She couldn't react. She couldn't even move her fingers not to talk of moving her body.
"Why do my fingers feel heavy?" She thought inwardly as she tried to move her fingers.
Then she tried opening her eyes but realized she couldn't. Her eyes also felt heavy and were tightly shut.
"She has slipped into coma!" Evelyn could hear the doctor's voice saying. The doctor sounded solemn.
"Is that about me? What happened? How did I end up like this?" Evelyn wondered with uncertainty.
"My dad..." She remembered the incident with her dad and her brain replayed one of the moments she had shared with her dad. It was when her mother's death was still fresh, leaving her and her father mourning and relying on one another.
*FLASHBACK*
"Sweetheart, you have to stop wallowing in sorrow. Your mother's death hurts me as much it hurts you but we have no choice but to keep living. I am certain that is what your mother wants for us." Robert said to her.
"Henceforth, I am going to be the mother and the father for you. I will ensure you do not lack motherly love." Evelyn's father had promised her and indeed he kept to his promise.
He had showered her with love and care. He would even go out of his way to make her happy. To keep her protected and safe.
"Sweetheart, we are having that talk today." Robert announced one certain day.
"No dad, I am not having the menstrual talk with you." Evelyn had protested.
"Why not?" Robert deadpanned.
"Because... Because you are my dad?" Evelyn stated more like a question and Robert laughed.
"I am your father and mother, forgotten? So sit your ass down and let's talk about it. I have read a lot about it online. And I have even consulted my doctor friend, so trust me, I know what I want to talk about it." He assured her.
"You even consulted a doctor?" Evelyn was astonished. That wasn't the first time her loving father would go out of his way for her, anyway.
"Yes, a female doctor friend. So, we are having the sex talk too." He told her.
*END OF FLASHBACK*
"That is the father who turns out not to be my biological father?" Evelyn thought solemnly. She couldn't just wrap her head around it. It was too shocking and unbelievable.
"He is the father that I have known all my life. Where and to whom do I turn to now?" She asked herself solemnly. She wanted to cry but she felt even tired to do that.
"Doctor, you have tried your best. Now, it is up to her will and determination to scale through." Evelyn heard someone else saying to the doctor.
"That would be one of the nurses." Evelyn noted. She wanted to open her eyes and her mouth. She wanted to tell the doctor that she could hear everything but she just couldn't.
"Right. I hope she has a strong will to live." Evelyn heard the doctor said solemnly.
"Strong will to live? I doubt that. I don't even have anybody to live for n..." Evelyn was thinking about how she had just became an orphan and nothing to live for when a voice interrupted her.
"She has to, at least for the sake of her newly born child." The voice that Evelyn knew definitely belonged to a nurse, chipped in. Afterwards, Evelyn could hear retreating steps and there was silence after that. She knew she had been left alone.
"My child..." Evelyn remembered about her baby and her heart sank. There and then, she remembered she had someone to live for.
"My child needs me. I better get up and go to meet my child." She thought and wanted to get up from the bed but couldn't move at all.
"What is happening to me? Am I really in coma now?" She wondered.
"I guess I am. Oh no, God please. I can't die like this." She sobbed inwardly.
"Who... Who on earth will take care of my child if I die?" She sobbed harder.
