Chapter 48

They moved with a predator's precision, their eyes cold and calculating as they scanned the room.

"Stay back!" I yelled, raising the candlestick. My voice sounded stronger than I felt, but I doubted it would scare them off.

The larger of the two men chuckled darkly, his gaze locking onto me. "Feisty one, aren't you?"

I swung the candlestick with all the strength I could muster as he lunged toward me. It connected with his shoulder, and he let out a grunt of pain, but it didn't stop him.

Before I could swing again, the second man grabbed me from behind, his arms locking around me like a vice.

"Let me go!" I screamed, thrashing wildly.

The man holding me laughed, his breath hot against my ear. "Dimitri's wife, huh? I can see why he likes you."
