Lily paced the small storage room, her heart racing, her thoughts spiraling as she replayed the kiss in her mind. It hadn't been planned—it hadn't even made sense—but it lingered. The memory of Kaden's lips on hers burned her like fire, consuming her. She forced herself to focus as the door creaked open, revealing Ewan.
"It didn't work," Lily said abruptly, "It did not work."
"What?" Ewan froze in place, his hands tightening into fists at his sides. "What do you mean, 'it didn't work'? He's alive?"
"Yes." She folded her arms across her chest, avoiding his gaze. "The poison wasn't strong enough. He woke up."
Ewan let out a humorless laugh. "Impossible. No one survives that. Are you sure you did it right?"
"I'm sure," Lily snapped. "I did exactly as you said. But he's alive."
