Chapter 46

The scent of damp linen and soap clung to the air, mixing with the lingering aroma of freshly cut wood. The servants' yard was quieter than usual, the usual chatter replaced by murmurs of grief. News of the King's death had spread like wildfire and even the air felt different—thicker, heavier.

Lily stood near the woodpile, her hands still covered in fine sawdust from cutting logs earlier. She should have been working, keeping her head down like the rest of the servants, but she found herself staring off into the distance, lost in thought.

Kaden.

No matter how much she tried to shut him out, he was there, lingering at the edges of her mind.

She had spent data telling herself she despised him, that she wanted nothing more than to see him fall. And yet… something had shifted. She reminded herself everyday that he killed her parents and destroyed her colony but somehow he had broken a wall so deep inside of her and she had no idea how to fill up the cracks.
