CHAPTER 8

Donald Walker approached the sprawling gate of the Emerald Fields plantation. The morning sun cast a warm glow over the endless row of crops, but Donald barely noticed, his mind more focused on the task ahead of him. He was not just any job applicant, but he was here for a reason.

He was dressed in a black T-shirt and a plain trouser, with an old sandal. Donald knew he didn't have to look good for his new role; he would want people to see him as the same pauper, even if he had five million dollars in his bank account.

His eyes scanned around the premises; he still couldn't believe everything he was peering at belonged to Victor Nathan.

"How many companies does he own? What is he not telling me." He said to himself.

Donald drew a deep breath as he walked into the building, holding a file containing his details. Everything has been prepared by Aaron Jones. He found a female janitor close to the entrance; she was busy doing the needful.

"Good morning," Donald said politely.

"Good morning," She replied.

"Please, I am here for the job interview." He said politely.

The lady looks at Donald, "Take the elevator to the second floor, James Mason. He is in charge of the interview." She replied smoothly.

Donald nods his head, "Thank you." He said in appreciation.

"You are welcome," she responded before continuing with what she was doing.

Donald briskly walked towards the elevator, he waited for it to open. His eyes glancing around as he awaited patiently, he tossed his head when he heard a ding sound of the elevator, signifying it was about to open. To his greatest surprise, he saw a familiar figure, one which he despised so much.

It was none other than Kate Henderson, Pamela's best friend. He tossed his eyes brow, with his gaze facing downward and was about to enter the elevator when she pushed him back and stopping him from going forward.

"Wow, Wow, Look who we have here." She said, staring at him from head to toe. "Donald Walker, What are you doing here? Who allowed you inside the building." She said with her voice filled with disdain.

Behind her were two of her junior colleagues, each had a file on their hands.

Donald gave her a cold glance; he knew how irritated Kate could be whenever she was around him. She would always look for a way to humiliate him whenever she had the opportunity.

"Excuse me, Kate. I am here for a job interview and I am running out of time." He said politely.

Kate laughed uncontrollably, using her hand to cover her mouth, as she darted her gaze from her colleagues to Donald. "Who told you, you are welcome here, and what makes you think you will be employed to work in this company? You are a poor ass dude. You are not welcome in a place like this. You should go back to wherever you are coming from before you contaminate us with your poor life." She uttered.

Her junior colleagues exchanged glances and laughed softly, after hearing her statement.

Donald frowned his brow; he was boiling in inner anger. He knew he had to compose himself so as not to ruin the plan. He tried moving towards the other direction, but Kate stopped him.

"Where do you think you are going? Are you deaf? I said get the hell out of here before I called the security to throw you out."

She paused and mouthed. "The company indeed needs a janitor, but I wouldn't allow them to employ you. You are a failure, and we don't need that here; I will make sure you don't only fail the interview, but you are thrown out of the company."

Donald shook his head as he stared at her with a straight face. "Kate, you don't own the company. Neither does your family own any company in Louisville. I don't see any reason why you are stopping me from going for the interview; allow the management to make the judgment themselves." He said firmly.

Kate's heart thumped in furiousness, she found his statement insulting, She was mad at him in a menacing manner. She noticed how her junior colleagues were staring at her; Kate knew she couldn't walk away; if not, it would look embarrassing.

"I know my family didn't own a company, but I can determine your fate. Let's make a bet, if you get the job, I will quit mine. but if you don't get the job. Donald, you will have to kneel before me and apologize."

"Why will I apologize to you when it's your fault if you had respected yourself? This wouldn't have happened," he said as he cast a deadly glare at her.

Donald shook his head in disbelief, he could see the confidence that was evident in her gaze as she smiled wryly.

"I am in, get ready to lose your job," Donald said with a serious tone.

"This dude is insane, he doesn't know who Miss Kate is?" One of the junior colleagues whispered to the other colleague.

"I will not be surprised if he fails the interview." The second colleague said softly.

Kate thought about something, knowing her plans might fail. Donald was about to move into the elevator, and she hurriedly grabbed the file from his hand. Tearing it into a million pieces.

Her junior colleague's jaw dropped in disbelief and shock.

"What have you done? Why? Are you mad?" Donald screamed in a deep voice.

His eyes were blazing in fury; he was about to bounce on her, but he remembered what he was there for and had to compose himself.

"Let's see how you will get the job," Kate said disdainfully.
