The crowd gasped in shock as they watched the scene happening before them. Donald tutted his lips, and his hand formed in a fist.
"What do I do? Should I call Mr. Victor? Or should I still go for the interview? How?" he said to himself as he stared at the pieces of paper before him.
While he was thinking about what to do. Two Rolls Royce stopped at the entrance, and Mr. Victor Nathan stepped down from the car. His presence commanded authority.
His guards bowed their heads towards him; behind him was his butler, Aaron Jones, holding his briefcase. he ambled into the main building, where he noticed some crowd gathering close to the elevator; he tossed his gaze and found Kate standing with her hand folded in akimbo posture, with a stern face. He looked and found Donald standing with a gloomy face.
Without being told, he knew something was wrong.
"What is going on, and why are you all standing here?" He asked in an authoritative tone as he noticed the piece of paper that was littered around the premises.
The staff bowed their heads in respect, their minds pounding in fear, knowing he wouldn't take it likely with them; they were supposed to be working and not standing doing nothing.
The two junior colleagues took two steps backwards; they knew something strange was about to happen.
"What is going on here? Are you all deaf?" He said firmly.
Kate felt a surge of confidence coursing through her veins, knowing she had been in the company for some years. She took a step towards Mr. Victor.
"Sir, this man here came for a job interview. And he is a pauper, I can tell because I know him properly. He stinks of poverty, and his staying here would be a bad idea. He would bring shame and bad luck to the company."
Victor shifted his gaze towards Donald, who kept a gloomy expression, and he grasped what was happening before him. He tossed his head to Kate Henderson.
"Are you the Human resources manager, are you responsible for conducting the interviews." He questioned firmly.
Kate shook her head; she was about to make a statement when Mr Victor Nathan flung his hand at her.
He interposed her. "You don't speak unless you are asked to say something. Allow the man to do the talking himself." He said he knew he had to play along. It was his plan for Donald to come to the company to apply as a janitor.
"Young man, why are you here?" he questioned.
Donald inhaled and exhaled softly, "Sir, I came for a job interview but your staff tore my application letters into pieces." He spoke out with anger, pointing at the pieces of paper that were scattered around.
Mr. Victor gave Kate an evil glance, "How dare you? Who gave you the authority to do such." He yelled angrily with an authoritative tone.
The two junior colleagues exchanged worrisome glances at each other, knowing Kate had gotten herself into something bigger than her.
Kate felt her voice trembling; she couldn't utter a word. His voice sent a quivering towards her body, and her legs were becoming weak.
"I…I..am sorry", she stuttered, with a shaking lip.
"Young man, you are employed and you are to start immediately." He said firmly.
"Thank you, sir," Donald said with his head bent forward, he smiled as he stared at Kate Henderson.
"And as for you, your salary has been seized. You are to write an apology letter to him, and you must read it every day for a week before you proceed with any task in your office." He commanded.
The staff who witnessed the scene and the two junior colleagues gasped in shock. The lobby was engulfed with silent murmurings.
Kate felt her heart thumping fast, and her once excited face turned crimson. She couldn't believe she would be apologizing to her friend's ex-husband.
"Young man, what is your name?" Mr. Victor asked, pretending not to know Donald.
"My name is Donald Walker, sir," he said politely.
"Donald, meet me in my office." He said firmly.
Kate felt embarrassed; she felt her heart-tugging in pain and disgrace. She watched as Donald trailed behind Mr. Victor Nathan.
"I will make life miserable for you in this company, you just signed your warrant." She said inwardly.
"Ma, we are waiting for you." One of the junior colleagues said softly.
Kate gave them a cold glance; she flung her hand, signalling them to go back to their offices.
She tutted her lips and walked away with shame that had engulfed her face. Kate heading towards the human resources manager's office. She swung the door open angrily without knocking.
James Mason, who was seated behind his mahogany desk, with his eyes fixed on his computer screen, raised his brow towards her. He noticed the sadness that had engulfed her facial expression.
"What is it, why are you looking like someone who saw a ghost." He said smoothly.
"Is that all you have to say? Why not call me the ghost itself?" She intoned with an unfriendly voice.
James got up from his seat and ambled towards her. He places his hands around her. "I am sorry, my love. Talk to me, why are you sad." He asked with his voice barely above a whisper.
Kate sighed in frustration, "Do you know Donald, that useless ex-husband of my friend, Pamela."
James nodded in response. "Yes, what happened to him,"
"I saw him in the building, I tried to humiliate him, and we even placed a bet. I thought I was going to win not until Mr. Victor showed up and handed him the job."
James furrowed his brow in disbelief, "You mean Donald has been employed in the company? How?"
She was about to explain when her phone rang out; she glanced at the screen and noticed it was from Mr Victor's secretary, Emma.
"Why is she calling me," she muttered inwardly.
"Who is it," James asked.
She stared at him, "It's Emma, Mr. Victor's secretary."
"Why is she calling you,"
Kate shrugged her shoulders in disappointment, "I have no idea."
"Then pick up the call, to know the reason why."
Kate exhaled, letting air out of her mouth; she answered the call and waited patiently.
"Hello, Kate, where are you? Mr. Victor Nathan requests your presence at his office immediately." She voices out.
"What!!! Why?"
"I don't know. Just come fast, you know how he reacts whenever he is upset about something."
Emma terminated the call, Kate felt her heart pounding fast in fear. James' phone buzzed; he glanced at his phone screen and found Mr Victor's name boldly.
James gazes at Kate before switching his gaze towards his phone and answering the call.
"James, I want to see you in my office right now." Mr. Victor Nathan said with a serious voice.
"Okay, sir. I am on my way." He replied.
Mr. Victor terminated the call immediately after he got a response from James.
Something strange is about to happen; what has Kate gotten herself into?
