Seeing things

Scott's heart thudded in his chest as the words left his mouth. "Don't tell me… Kain is one of them?"

Melissa's eyes darted between her son and husband, alarm flashing in her gaze. "Kain? That's impossible. Right?" she asked, her voice trembling as she fixed her stare on Richard.

Richard let out a long, exaggerated sigh, rubbing a hand over his face. "Calm down, both of you. Kain isn't a vampire."

Scott felt a wave of relief wash over him, but it lasted only a second.

"Yet," Richard added grimly. "He's not a vampire yet."

The room fell silent as both Melissa and Scott turned to Richard, their stunned gazes demanding answers.

"What?" Melissa gasped, her voice barely above a whisper. "Are you saying..."

"Yes," Richard cut her off, his tone clipped. "Kain will be turned into a vampire soon if we don't stop it."

Scott's breath hitched. "I… I don't understand, Dad. What are you talking about?"
