"Lachlan! Don't move a muscle!" Siu Fung's word use brought me back to the present.

"No!" I yelled. "Don't hurt him! Don't hurt Aron!"

The harpoon made hardly a sound as it left the barrel of the gun and hurtled towards us, barely a whisper above the rush of waves. I didn't really feel it as it punctured through me and into the shark, but I did feel my strength suddenly wash away from me.

I'd been foolish. It had been arrogant of me to think my flimsy body could stop such hate from finding its mark.

I heard Siu Fung scream, and I felt hands grasp me and pull me up onto the rocks. I blinked away the white sparks in my eyes and focused on the crying boy beside me. I reached out a hand and rested it on his head.

"It's alright," I told him. "Just give it a minute, it'll get better. I can't die from this."

"Lachlan…"

I sighed.
