003.1

The cliché tale of marrying a princess and reaching the pinnacle of life—those things always seemed to happen in stories.

'An old woman dropping something into a tree hollow? Well, that's still within the realm of acceptability, I suppose.' Rod thought inwardly.

"Let me help you look for it."

Standing before the tree hollow, Rod realized the tree was even bigger than he had imagined.

The hollow in the middle was large enough to easily fit a burly man inside.

Rod peered into the hole. The dark hollow stretched downward into the earth, and he couldn't see the bottom.

"I have a magic rope here. You can use it to climb down," the old woman kindly offered, handing him a coiled rope.

'The rope's all ready, huh?'

'Why don't you climb down and get it yourself then? Did you drop your stuff by accident, or did you throw it down there on purpose?'

Rod glanced at the old woman but said nothing. He was curious to see what kind of scheme this old hag was cooking up.

After securing the rope, Rod began to descend into the hollow.

The rope, despite its short length, seemed to stretch endlessly into the abyss.

Well, at least she wasn't lying. The rope indeed had magic imbued in it.

Before long, his feet touched the ground.

Looking up, Rod found himself facing a dark corridor.

He snapped his fingers, and immediately, a radiant glow erupted from his body, illuminating the entire passageway.

At the end of the corridor were three doors, each of varying sizes.

One was a small bronze door, just the size for a child. Another was a silver door, large enough for an adult. And the last, a massive golden door, stood larger than an elephant.

"Young man, what I dropped was a flint. It's behind one of those doors. There are sleeping beasts guarding the inside, but this blanket will make them sleep even deeper."

"When you find it, I'll pull you back up."

A dusty gray blanket was lowered down from the tree hollow, and the rope was promptly pulled back up by the old woman.

It was clear: unless he found the item, she had no intention of pulling him out.

"This old hag..." Rod muttered under his breath.

'Even if I do find the thing, I'm not so sure you'll live long enough to claim it!'
