Chapter 147: An Uncomfortable Visit With the Parents

Dimitri POV

Elina's news had him patting his chest to make sure someone hadn't driven a stake through his heart when he was completely oblivious. His heart went from soaring to feeling ripped in two, with heartburn on top of it.

His parents, whom he hadn't spoken to since their imprisonment, wanted to see him? About a life or death matter?

His fangs hurt at the very thought. Tension squeezed his forehead like a vise, and he wished Elina hadn't interrupted the joyful moment. But, looking in her grim but sympathetic brown eyes, he could only mutter, "Thanks, Elina."

"Clearly not as good news as I'm guessing you just got before I threw a shadow over your party," Elina said with a small, wry smile.

For once, Ariana and Irina fumbled for something to say. They looked at him with quizzical expressions, seeking direction. Should they tell Elina or not?

"We're going to be parents," he told her, with a grin.

Ariana beamed. "That's right."
