"Order! Order!" bellowed the Senate President, slamming his gavel repeatedly.
The noise gradually subsided as senators returned to their seats, still muttering and glaring at one another.
"We will now proceed to a formal vote on Senator Brice's proposal for a nationwide biometric sweep," the President announced. "All in favor, say 'Aye.'"
A chorus of "Ayes" rang out.
"All opposed, say 'Nay.'"
Another wave of voices filled the chamber.
The President conferred briefly with his aides, then cleared his throat. "The vote stands at 50-50. The motion does not pass."
Brice slammed his fist on the table. "You've got to be kidding me."
Leroux leaned in close. "We need to flip some votes. Fast."
