As I took a deep breath, it felt like the weight on my chest lifted slightly. Each word exchanged with Dominic finally sank in, and I sighed with a mix of relief and anxiety. I found myself missing Ryder and Nora, their familiar presence offering a sense of comfort in this unfamiliar territory.
Ryder would have teased me mercilessly about being mated to the enemy, while Nora would have offered her unwavering support, cheering me on. She always wished for me to find my mate before Marcus could claim me, and in a strange twist of fate, her wish had come true, though not quite as we had imagined.
When Maya entered Dominic's office, her presence brought a sense of relief amidst the tension. She joked about her brother, lightening the atmosphere momentarily. But learning that she was related to Dominic only added another layer of complexity to the situation.
"He's your brother?" I asked, feeling a pang of sympathy for her.
She nodded sheepishly. "I know he can be intimidating, but he's actually a good person."
I wanted to disagree, given Dominic's past actions, but I held my tongue. There was no point in arguing with her about her brother.
"Come on," she urged, leading me to my room. Despite my initial reluctance, I followed her, knowing that attempting to escape now would be futile. Dominic wouldn't hesitate to capture me again.
My new room was spacious and practical, a stark contrast to the rest of the house. Its simplicity offered a sense of calm amidst the chaos of my thoughts. Maya's presence helped ease my nerves, and I felt grateful to have her as an ally in this unfamiliar territory.
After she left, I showered and changed into fresh clothes, trying to regain some semblance of normalcy. But when Dominic returned unexpectedly, I found myself flustered by his presence once again.
He seemed absorbed in his work, barely sparing me a glance as he flipped through papers on his lap. His casual demeanor irked me, and I struggled to mask my frustration.
"What is that?" I asked, trying to divert my embarrassment.
"Pack work," he replied, his eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. "I have to review these files regularly to ensure everything runs smoothly."
I nodded absently, feeling a surge of annoyance at his suggestion that I should involve myself in pack affairs so soon after my arrival.
Before I could protest, Evelyn interrupted, informing Dominic of wolves from Pale Moon who had trespassed on their territory. Dominic's demeanor shifted instantly, his concern for the pack evident in his reaction.
As he prepared to leave, he turned to me with a warning. "You'll stay here until I return. I can't risk your safety."
His words touched me, despite my efforts to remain guarded. As much as I wanted to resist, a part of me couldn't help but appreciate his genuine concern for my well-being.
"We'll talk when I get back," he promised, his touch sending shivers down my spine. "I want you to know that you're safe here."
Though conflicted, I remained silent, unsure of what to say. As he left, I found myself gasping for air, his absence leaving me feeling strangely empty yet electrified by his touch.
