LIN XUAN'S POV
**************************
I opened the large wooden wardrobe in my room and ran my gaze on the countless robes folded neatly in the five compartments. The previous Lin Xuan's style had been too flashy and bright while I preferred dull colors like black. I had secretly bought new clothes that I had intended to slowly integrate with 'his' style. But now that I was about to leave, I could just carry the new clothes and try to be at least half of what I was in my previous life.
After I had taken out all the clothes I needed, including underwear since I couldn't let 'my thing' go swaying around(still embarrassed about this new life), I called in a servant to help me pack them in a box.
When everything was done, it was already nightfall. Argh!
How I had hurried to try and go back to the inn and spend the night there for the money I had paid. But now it seemed as if it'd just go to waste.
Giving up the idea, I instead chose to relax on the bed after a bath.
"A new life is about to begin. I'm a little excited and anxious at the same time. Aaaaaah!" I grinned grabbing the pillow and hugging it. "Dear gods, why can't you change my gender?"
I gasped suddenly remembering about the little weird cat. "Bai?" I called out and jerked my eyes around the room for it to show up. "Bai? Can you hear me? I'd like to-"
"Hello, Host. You survived." There was a note of sarcasm in its tone but I overlooked it sitting up.
"I need to ask you something."
"Anything."
Locking eyes with it while it levitated above my legs, I asked, "Can you make me a woman again?"
"No."
"What?! Why? You were powerful to make Liang Yi my guardian."
"I did not. You gave up your blessings in exchange for having a protector. There was another option other than making Liang Yi your protector; you could have chosen to absorb those blessings directly and become one of the strongest young men in the country. But-"
"What!" I yelled shocked by the stupid decision I had made. But in my defense, this little cat being hadn't given me the second option. Or maybe I had been impatient due to suffocation to let it finish.
Had I just lost my chance of becoming strong in exchange for not being killed by Liang Yi? Such a rotten deal.
"I want to take back the blessing and choose the-"
"It's already done, Host. Once something is done, you cannot undo it."
"Then, my body. Ask the gods to make me a woman again."
It sighed as if already annoyed with my requests. "Host, a soul had no gender. You have been reincarnated ninety times and half of them, you were born as a man. This is not even a reincarnation. You lived a pitiful life that the god in charge of fate chose to give your soul one last chance. If you fail to become enlightened and die, your soul will be shattered and will cease to exist.
"That is why you still have memories of your last life to help you avoid traps and give you some wisdom. The person who caused your death was reborn as well and she will be the reason you will die if you don't strive to break your fate."
"Y...you mean that Lin Yan is also, here?"
My eyes widened as I stared at Bai.
"Yes. And just like you, she still has her memories and might have already been informed about your presence by her guide. In every lifetime, one of you kills the other, or you two die at the same time. This is your fate, Lin Xuan."
My spirit drooped. That vicious woman had followed me here as well. What bad luck was this?
"Where, where is she?"
"I'm afraid I cannot answer that. We are bound by the laws of the Dao not to directly interfere with fate. However, I will tell you this: your rival will also join Cloud Sect. The wheel of fate will continue spinning until you break free from it."
#############
Bai's words lingered in my mind for a day. Even as I left the city for Cloud Sect, I still couldn't stop thinking about the information I had been given.
I looked down at the bottle in my hand. The mysterious pill inside provided by Bai was to help me repair my dantian to its peak, even better than it was before the other Lin Xuan died.
What Bai had said about my limited time had suddenly left me worried and with the desire to do all I could to survive.
If I could gain more enlightenment and become an immortal, then I'd have broken my fate.
It seemed that I had gained a goal without the need to create one for myself.
My stay in Cloud Sect would not be as lazy as I had wanted it to be but rather, I'd have to begin my cultivation journey while slowly accepting that I was no longer a woman. The soul had no gender. If I didn't have my previous life's memories, I'd have adapted to having a male body easily.
But it was still not too late. I would be the best man alive and become an immortal.
##############
On the fifth night of the journey across three cities and countless towns and mountains, the carriage broke down in the middle of a thick forest.
We were forced to camp in a cave and as expected, I was given the best spot to sleep.
As the fire crackled, the men my father had sent to protect me continued sharing stories that I wasn't that interested in but grateful for their company.
It was calming not having to be alone in such an odd place. And as I partially listened to their tales, I became drowsy despite fighting to stay up.
Maybe the warmth finally got to me along with the day's fatigue.

3RD POV
***************************
"He's unconscious. It's time to do it, brothers," one of the five men sitting around the fire informed the rest in a whisper. "We're far from his city. If he does here and his body gets eaten by wild beasts, nobody will ever know."
"You're right. I've always hated his spoiled life. Why does he get to have such a nice background and all the women while people like us stayed as slaves?" another complained glaring at Lin Xuan's direction. "But he's quite pretty himself. Why don't we...have some fun before we send him on his way?"
"Tsk! Can you do it with a man?" the first servant questioned getting up.
He walked over to where Lin Xuan was sleeping on the duvets and squatted.
As the golden light from the fire fell on his face, the man hovering around him brought his hand down to clear the hair from Lin Xuan's face. "You're right. I've never looked this brat closely before. But he is indeed like a beautiful girl."
The servants who had proposed the idea of taking advantage of the unconscious Lin Xuan hurried over. "I'll go first. I've always wanted to try him."
"It sounds as if you've done it with a ma before."
"What do you know? Before I was taken in by the Lin mansion, I had to sell my body to anyone who could buy it."
"This doesn't feel right. Let's just kill him and throw away his body. We were not instructed to touch him," a third servant spoke up, earning the glares of his mates.
"Shut up and go guard the entrance in case some stray dog tries to come in!"
