Chapter Six- Adriana

Something wicked this way comes.

This doesn't end with me.

My thoughts are a confused mess.

But at least Derrick has said yes.

And I have 'found' my mate before the Full Moon.

"Okay," I tell him as I start making supper. "I need to go back home for the Full Moon, where you'll be acknowledged as my mate. That is in about three and a half weeks. Then, two months after that, we have to return again."

"For the crowning ceremony." he says, repeating what I told him earlier.

"Yes," I say as I cut up chicken and adds it to the pot of vegetables, herbs and spices.

"It will be a simple ceremony. I'll accept my role as new leader, and I'll promise myself and my mate to the coven."

"I have a feeling that this is going to backfire," Derrick says darkly, coming around the counter and filling the kettle.

"I mean, if I'm being promised to the coven, won't it be suspicious when we 'reject the mating bond' after a few months. Won't I still be liable?"

"Not really," I shrug, taking the mug of coffee he hands me. "Once I change the rules, we can break the vow. Magic is good for something you know."

At least he is becoming used to the approximation of mating bliss we'll have to present to the coven.

I've already messaged my father, who sent me several dancing emojis.

I know he is relieved, probably because he assumes that I'll move back home.

Not in this fucking lifetime.

Now, Derrick and I have to prepare for the Full Moon. We have a little over three weeks to do it. I know we can do this.

Derrick is clearly highly intelligent, and I am powerful.

It will be a piece of cake.

We sit down and have dinner together, sipping the coffee, and he tells me more about his life.

It seems he became an Alpha by pure accident. He was kicked out of his family and pack when he was eighteen, for defending the life of an infant jaguar shifter.

He took the shifter and raised her like a daughter, before he found her family.

Her family thanked him, and he realized that they were 'strays' too. And in that way, he started his pack.

I push my food around in my plate, as I picture Derrick with a baby in his arms.

For a moment, I wish I had really found my mate. For a moment, I wish I was really building a family.

For a moment, I want to ask him to call things off.

But no, I can't take this away from him now. I know that I am helping him in a way he never expected.

I am pretty sure that if anything else goes wrong, he'll have a heart attack.
