The Siberian fortress crumbled behind them as the self-destruct sequence, triggered during the final battle, unleashed a series of explosions. Alyssa and Eleanor sprinted through the tunnels, their ears ringing as the ground shook beneath them. They emerged into the cold night, breaths visible in the freezing air.
The snowstorm had subsided, revealing the sprawling mountains illuminated by the distant glow of the fires within the compound. Alyssa turned back to watch the flames, her chest rising and falling with exhaustion and relief. It was finally over.
Eleanor stood beside her, hands resting on her knees as she caught her breath. "That was... close."
"Too close," Alyssa replied, straightening herself. "But we made it. The Shroud is finished."
Their comms crackled to life, and Marcus's voice came through, thick with concern. "Alyssa, Eleanor! Do you copy?"
Alyssa pressed her earpiece. "We're here, Marcus. It's done."
There was a brief silence, then Marcus exhaled in disbelief. "You did it. The whole world's going to feel this one."
"We'll need extraction," Eleanor said. "The compound's going down fast."
"Already on it. I'm sending a bird your way. Hang tight."
As they waited, the two women stood in silence, staring out at the fiery remnants of the compound. They had fought so hard, sacrificed so much, but they had won. Alyssa felt the weight of everything they had been through settle in her bones, the loss of friends, the countless battles, the narrow escapes. It was finally over, and yet the victory felt hollow in the quiet of the night.
Eleanor broke the silence. "Think it's really over?"
Alyssa glanced at her. "The Shroud's leadership is gone. We dismantled their operations. There's no way they can recover from this."
Eleanor nodded slowly, her eyes narrowing. "But there will always be something else. Someone else who tries to pick up where they left off."
"Maybe," Alyssa replied. "But we'll be ready."
The sound of rotor blades echoed in the distance, and soon, the helicopter appeared on the horizon. As it touched down, Alyssa and Eleanor climbed aboard, the warmth of the cabin enveloping them. Marcus greeted them with a relieved smile.
"You did it. I knew you would."
Alyssa nodded tiredly. "Let's get home."
