Chapter 289: Naruto Gets Betrayed by Kurama
"Pay up, Kurama! It's time to show Uncle Haneda the bond between us!"
But Kurama remained silent. The Nine-Tails Chakra Cloak that Naruto had envisioned didn't materialize—there was no effect at all.
"Huh?"
"Kurama, you betrayed me!"
"Boohoo~"
Naruto immediately put on a pitiful act, hugging Haneda's leg in an attempt to awaken whatever fatherly affection Haneda might have.
But what greeted him instead were three all-too-familiar smacks on the head.
"Kurama? Bond? You're just a kid, and you want to imitate the bond between me and Kakashi?"
Haneda sneered.
That proud and stubborn big fox, Kurama, would behave after a good beating. Did Kurama seriously dare lend his chakra to Naruto for a full-force attack against Haneda?
This time, it was Sasuke's turn to laugh.
But instead of a sly snicker, Sasuke laughed outright, openly ridiculing Naruto:
"Naruto! You big idiot! You think your ridiculous borrowed power is enough to challenge the strongest of the Uchiha?"
"I heard from Nii-san that Uncle Haneda has dealt with at least four tailed beasts like the Nine-Tails!"
Sasuke raised his head proudly, displaying the Uchiha clan crest on his back, basking in a sense of glory.
Unwilling to accept this, Naruto clenched his fists and shouted loudly:
"Sasuke! Kurama is the strongest!!"
"As long as I activate the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, I'll get my revenge and knock Uncle Haneda flat on the ground!"
"Ah—ouch, ouch, ouch!!"
Another lump joined the two already on Naruto's head.
"No matter what chakra mode or fancy tricks you use, in front of these eyes, it's all meaningless."
Haneda opened his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, his mesmerizing yet eerie eyes immediately captivating everyone's attention.
Sensing a strong threat, Kurama couldn't help but issue a heartfelt warning:
"Naruto, stop messing around. He's stronger than Uchiha Madara and Senju Hashirama at their peaks."
Shocked, Naruto, who had been deceived, demanded answers:
"Kurama! Didn't you say you were strong? You can't beat Uncle Haneda?"
Though begrudgingly, Kurama had to admit:
"That's correct. I can't beat him, and neither can the other tailed beasts."
Hearing this, Naruto instantly deflated like a punctured balloon.
At that moment, Iruka pushed through the surrounding students and rushed over.
He grabbed Sasuke with one hand and lifted Naruto with the other, hurriedly apologizing to Haneda:
"I'm sorry, Hokage-sama. This was my failure as their teacher."
"Naruto, Sasuke, apologize to the Hokage immediately."
Feeling thoroughly betrayed by Kurama, Naruto teared up and said:
"Uncle Haneda~ I was wrong! I'll never do it again, I promise!"
Sasuke grumbled, thinking that if it weren't for Naruto, that complete idiot, he wouldn't have ended up in this mess.
Still, he feared punishment from his father upon returning home, so he reluctantly added:
"Sorry, Uncle Haneda. There won't be a next time—ever."
After apologizing, Sasuke turned and glared at Naruto, who glared back in defiance.
Haneda, uninterested in dealing with Naruto, the troublemaker, or Sasuke, who was being dragged into trouble, instructed Iruka:
"Make sure to focus more on teaching morals and values to the students. Let them know that the Hokage's position isn't something you can obtain just by trying to assassinate the current one."
"The true Hokage is someone recognized and supported by everyone."
Kakashi, noticing that Haneda was about to leave, closed his book and stood up.
As expected, Haneda gave a farewell wave and teleported away with Kakashi using the Flying Thunder God.
"I have work to handle in the office this morning. In the afternoon, I'll come to your class and personally teach, Iruka-sensei."
Hearing that the Hokage himself would be coming to teach in the afternoon, the surrounding students cheered with excitement.
The teachers, meanwhile, felt a mix of admiration and guilt.
The Hokage already had such a heavy workload, yet Haneda still made time to personally teach the students.
It was truly moving!
They reflected on their own lack of diligence and felt they should follow the Hokage's example.
Naruto, upon hearing that Haneda would come in the afternoon, lit up with excitement.
The main reason he had tried to ambush Haneda was because it had been over a month since Haneda had properly spent time with him.
Naruto hated feeling neglected like this.
...
Haneda and Kakashi teleported to a small riverbank.
It was a spot where Kakashi often fished, and Haneda had previously marked it with the Flying Thunder God.
Seeing the familiar river, Kakashi's expression said it all—"Of course."
He didn't even bother questioning Haneda's claim about returning to the office for work.
After all, with Shikaku, Tsunade, and occasionally Asuma handling things, Konoha and its administration were more than covered.
The two tacitly picked up fishing rods and sat by the river to fish.
After catching a few fish, they noticed it was nearing noon and returned to Kakashi's house.
Kakashi was quick in the kitchen.
A few pan-fried river fish were soon ready, along with a set of utensils and a glass of orange juice placed on Haneda's table.
"Let's eat!"
Haneda clasped his hands together and enjoyed the fish Kakashi had prepared.
Kakashi glanced at Haneda and smiled faintly.
This felt just like the old days, when Obito and Rin used to sneak into his house to eat together.
He cherished this feeling.
...
In the afternoon, it was time for training sessions according to the academy schedule.
Students would head to the training grounds to practice taijutsu. Some senior students would also work on basic ninjutsu like the Three Basic Jutsu.
But today, almost no one was seriously training at the grounds.
The great Hokage-sama was coming to teach in person, and they had been looking forward to it since the morning.
During lunch, they had excitedly discussed what the Hokage might teach.
Naruto and Sasuke, surrounded by their classmates, were the center of attention.
As people close to Haneda, they were seen as having inside information.
Curious students eagerly approached them, hoping for hints:
"What will the Hokage teach? Taijutsu? Kenjutsu? Shuriken techniques? Ninjutsu? Genjutsu?"
"I hope he demonstrates some incredible ninjutsu! The legendary God of Ninja must know super-cool techniques!"
"Shallow thinking! My dad said the Hokage can destroy the heavens and the earth with a single jutsu! His casual Wood Release could crush tens of thousands of ninja! If he performed it in the village, Konoha itself would be wiped out!"
Hearing this, the nearby students gasped in shock. Perhaps it was better if the Hokage didn't demonstrate ninjutsu after all.
As the chatter grew quieter, more students turned to Naruto and Sasuke.
They realized these two hadn't said anything yet, leaving everyone uncertain.
Naruto basked in the attention—this was the kind of recognition he had always craved.
He coughed a few times and spoke seriously:
"Uncle Haneda will definitely teleport in with Flying Thunder God, ramble about the Will of Fire, then casually demonstrate some basic ninjutsu before encouraging us a little."
"Yep, that matches Uncle Haneda's lazy, half-hearted style."
Sasuke scoffed, glaring at Naruto.
"Shut up, Naruto! Nii-san said Uncle Haneda always has clear plans for what he does. He's not someone who slacks off."
Compared to Naruto's disparaging remarks, the students trusted Sasuke's words more.
The great Hokage-sama must be strategic and meticulous in everything he does! How could he ever be lazy or careless?
Naruto protested: "It'll definitely be like that, Sasuke!!!"
Sasuke retorted: "It absolutely won't, Naruto!!!"
The two bickered, leaving the other students unable to get a word in.
Then, a kunai suddenly dropped to the ground, and a figure appeared, his back facing Naruto and Sasuke.
He wore the Hokage's robes, with the red characters for "Fifth Hokage" gleaming in the sunlight.
The noisy training ground fell silent.
It was none other than Uchiha Haneda!
